A mouthwatering address! Donamaría is hidden away off to one side of a pass through the mountains between France and Spain, within striking distance of San Sebastian and Pamplona; it was a farmers’ rest, now sisters Lorea (who studied tourism) and Haizea (an accomplished cook) are taking over the helm from their parents. These two ancient village houses are packed full of old furniture, vintage toys, dried flowers and a few surprises to boot; the atmosphere is intimate, authentic, easy. This is a place to linger long over lunch or dinner; connoisseurs rave about the traditional Navarra cooking with a modern French touch. Menus change according to season; warm duck salad with hazelnut vinaigrette, stuffed hake with garlic sauce, apple cake with cinnamon ice cream… all of it memorable. Bedrooms are plain, uncluttered and simple, bathrooms are small but pristine; two rooms have superb little terraces overlooking the river. The garden is beautiful, secluded, with weeping willows children may hide in; the oak forests make the heart soar.

This is such a beautiful place to ckme to. The views are stunning. The hotel is everything as described. We are so grateful that we can find hidden gems like this through Alastair Sawday's website - we would never have found this place!

This is the fifth time that we have stayed at Donamaria in the past 20 years. Lorea and Haizea are carrying on the superb tradition of their parents and it's always a joy to stay here. Very comfortable rooms and excellent Navarra cuisine. We look forward to our next visit.

I chose Donamaria as it looked beautiful and sounded lovely. We found it a little difficult to get the right place as Sawdays photo is not up to date. Sadly the waitress told us there was only a fixed menu so we missed the great fare. Otherwise it was lovely......your UK adaptor may not work but you will be supplied with another. The owners are delightful people and sell great wines and conserves.

Set in the middle of beautiful countryside, this is a little oasis. The rooms are stylish and cool and Lorea makes you feel very welcome. Dinner can be taken next door in the restaurant and is highly recommended for local specialities. Breakfast was personally prepared by Lorea who cooked perfect scrambled eggs. There is a garage for motorbikes which makes this a excellent stop before or after the Santander ferry.

We spent a delightful couple of days here. Lovely spacious room and delicious dinner each night. Our hostess was charming, very helpful on suggestions where to visit and had very good English!
