Play lord of the manor: rent the house (breakfast, laundry and maid service included, private cook available), install your friends in the cottage next door and pretend the estate is your own. Reached by an unmade track and in rolling, wooded countryside – with glimpses of the Gredos mountains – this has a secret, hideaway feel. As for the house, it oozes such luxury and style it’s hard to believe it was once a barn: Soledad and Iago spent three years reshaping it. Be delighted by cosy red armchairs, toile de Jouy curtains, a real log fire, a veranda with two irresistible hammocks. The gardens, too, are a joy: six hectares of holm oak and chestnut trees, cherries, apples, oranges, peaches, figs, olive and madroño: pluck what you will from the kitchen garden. Rural sounds are provided by the ‘Chicken Palace’ – source of fabulous new laid eggs – and frogs tuning up on the nearby pond. House and cottage share the prettily set (though unheated and unguarded) swimming pool. A hotel is being built on the estate a ten-minute walk away, and its facilities will be open to you.
