The
Experience

Play lord of the manor: rent the house (breakfast, laundry and maid service included, private cook available), install your friends in the cottage next door and pretend the estate is your own. Reached by an unmade track and in rolling, wooded countryside – with glimpses of the Gredos mountains – this has a secret, hideaway feel. As for the house, it oozes such luxury and style it’s hard to believe it was once a barn: Soledad and Iago spent three years reshaping it. Be delighted by cosy red armchairs, toile de Jouy curtains, a real log fire, a veranda with two irresistible hammocks. The gardens, too, are a joy: six hectares of holm oak and chestnut trees, cherries, apples, oranges, peaches, figs, olive and madroño: pluck what you will from the kitchen garden. Rural sounds are provided by the ‘Chicken Palace’ – source of fabulous new laid eggs – and frogs tuning up on the nearby pond. House and cottage share the prettily set (though unheated and unguarded) swimming pool. A hotel is being built on the estate a ten-minute walk away, and its facilities will be open to you.

Reviews

Visited La Vaqueria for 9 nights with our 9 and 11 year old boys. Beautiful and peaceful location with plenty of birdlife to see. Soledad was super helpful with suggestions for days out and cooks delicious meals on request. The pool was a life saver as the weather was so hot and the donkey and dogs were loved by the children. Lots of natural pools available locally for swimming and many day trips. Next time we would perhaps split our stay between two locations as some of the must see towns are quite a drive in very hot weather. I would definitely recommend La Vaqueria for all age groups.

Charm personified from the detailed interiors, the care of the staff and the late night conversations with Iago. La Vaqueria offers privacy and tranquility with personality, underscored by Soledad and Iago's real passion for their corner of beautiful Spanish region.

Just to let you know that we stayed here after finding it on your website and it was perfectly wonderful. 5 *****.

This is an idyllic spot with so much to see and do. Soledad and Iago are very charming and helpful. They made us feel very special and although it is possible to self cater for dinner, Soledad produces wonderful food with style and humour. We would definitely go back.

We never visit the same place twice but we had to break our rule for Cantaelgallo. It's a little paradise which gently unwinds your stress and restores your joie de vivre. Our children (15,17,19) adore it too and seeing Soledad as we arrived for our second visit this summer felt like visiting family. The decor is gorgeous and the atmosphere is relaxed and special. You can visit stunning beauty spots knowing that you are returning to this luxurious haven where you can watch the sun set behind the mountains in an olive grove sipping delicious wine. We can't recommend it enough!

We spent a few days just after new years eve. We went my wife and I with three babies (3 years old, 1.5 years old and 6 months old) and with one maid. the house was perfect. Small but cossy. the maid could sleep in her room in a different floor with her own entrance. the best were the owners, the breakfast and a lovely garden with donkeys and hens which made the Christmas season for our kids. Besides, it is very close to many interesting places (aprox 5 km away from the Yuste Monastery where Emperor Charles V retired). Absolutely felt at home and would always recomend it with no doubt

We loved the place and our 4 year-old son loved the donkeys, chickens, friendly little dogs, tree climbing and freedom to run around.

Jennie

Amazing place. Soledad, the owner is great, we had a great time.

Good location from which to explore southern Gredos mountains, Monfrague park and regional cities. As a family with 3 small children we felt very welcome and were looked after superbly including a candlelit dinner, spot on day trip itineraries and fun for the kids on the estancia. For once the pictures couldn't do justice to the place.

La Vaquaria is a little heaven and everyone there is so welcoming. Nonstop sunshine in a beautiful green oasis set against the spectacular backdrop of the Gredos. Very comfortable accommodation, fruit in abundance for the picking, private swimming pool and excellent hostess. By the end of the holiday we felt part of the family.

Vaqueria Cantaelgallo Spain. I rarely write reviews, but this place is incredibly special. The interior design and private pools for each villa are superbly detailed. The owners take great care to offer the first rate service, food, hospitality beyond expectation. The position is a hidden treasure, tucked away in idyllic setting. Thoroughly recommend.

La Vaqueria is a magical place and Soledad has thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. Highlights of our stay were the delicious dinners prepared in the garden, the beautiful breakfasts each morning underneath the cherry trees, the undisturbed views of the Gredo mountains from our private, fresh herbs and courgettes from the kitchen garden, the amazing blue hydrangeas and star gazing from the hammocks. Soledad went out of her way to ensure we saw all the highlights of the area including a hidden mountain spring swimming lake where we swam and had the best lunch of the trip.

We had a wonderful two week holiday at the Vacqueria - four adults and three children under 3yrs. The house is incredibly well equipped and the grounds and pool are beautiful. Soledad and her staff looked after every detail and have created a beautiful escape in the countryside. We couldn't have been happier with our stay.

A group of family and friends(9 total) spent 5 fantastic nights at Soledad. It was a brilliant experience on a host of levels. The setting against the snow capped mountains, with the amazing fire places going all day long. Soledad’s attention was far more than anyone of us expected for a self catering, delicious food, copious amounts of great wine. The introduction to Pepe and his wild paella was probably the best meal we had in the three weeks in Spain and Portugal. All round we could not ask for a better host and staff who could not do enough for us.

Kevin

We stayed in the cottage with our 16 month old daughter mid-October. Everything was just perfect. The cottage is very cosy and well decorated. Our little one enjoyed running around in the garden. Breakfast was delicious and so were the dinner we ordered every night and that was brought to the house. Finally the owner, their daughter and their lovely little dog were all very nice. We will come back!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from María Soledad Pidal Ochoa

  • La Comarca de la Vera is in a valley, south-facing part of Sierra de Gredos - with its pleasant climate all-year round, abundant water, unique architecture and villages.
  • The region is aboundant in peppers in the summer and the blossoming of the fruit trees (predominantly cherries) is worth seeing in the spring. The autumn is a real treat for those who love picking mushrooms.
  • Woods and Natural Reserves like Momfragüe National Park, Gredos and Guadalupe with its native wildlife.
  • Surrounded by World Heritage Sites: Caceres, Trujillo, Salamanca, Guadalupe, Plasencia, Oropesa
  • Pasarón de la Vera, a little village near the Vaqueria that is really worth seeing especially during Easter (Semana Santa).
  • In autumn, collect chestnuts, quince, mushrooms. For those who like painting and photography it is the ideal place. Cultural excursions no more than 1 hour drive, and MOMFRAGÜE NATIONAL PARK, is 20 km away, horseback riding, hiking, and more.
