Originally planned for the engineer who built the tranquil reservoir below, this grey stone house has been painstakingly renovated by its creative Danish/Spanish owners. It’s now romantic and quirky, with bedrooms fit for bridal parties, celebration trips or big family groups. The natural world has been invited in, with tree stumps and driftwood as bedside tables and lamps, and it’s energy efficient too thanks to a clever furnace which warms and cooks and solar panels. Extra beds can be put in double rooms for young children, while older offspring climb steep stairs to fun rooms with pallet beds. They might head for the trampoline and pool; for adults it’s lovely to sit in the Mediterranean garden with rosemary and lavender scenting the air. For guests who like action, there’s kayaking or swimming on the reservoir, cycling the Via Verde trail or walking the coastal path from Altafulla to historic Tarragona. It’s olive oil and wine country too, so tastings are easy to organise, and modernist architect Gaudi was inspired by the unique rock formations here – find out more in his birthplace, Reus.
