So hospitable are Joan and Marta, such naturals at doing B&B, that they’ve upped sticks from their smaller ‘special place’ and taken on Mas Masaller. This sprawling old farmhouse at the end of a rough track borders a sheep farm and is surrounded by small woods. Unassuming at the front, at the back there’s a super large terrace, a walled-in courtyard and a grassy yard with a play area and fenced pool. The configuration of rooms and outdoor spaces, and the owners’ own sweet children, make this a lovely place for families. Chef Joan (Catalan for John) is an excellent cook and meals at the big table are lively affairs. Spend the day at the beaches, a 30-minute drive; explore the shops and restaurants of Calella and Begur. Or tackle the valley’s Via Verde trails: there are bikes to hire. Return to the cool of the multi-room salon, all lofty ceilings and thick stone walls; old-fashioned tiles embedded into walls and Marta’s country furniture create a homely feel. Bedrooms are painted in whites and warm greys, bathrooms are Catalan rustic – or plain: this was a hostel two years ago. You’d never know it now!
