The
Experience

When the doors to this 12th-century rectory swung open again after meticulous restoration, locals were moved to tears. Set next to a Romanic church on Garrotxa’s volcanic western fringe, the sturdy building served as a school under Franco; the last priest left in the 1980s. Roy and Goretti, a Scottish chef and a Catalan whisky expert who met at The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, have revived chunky oak beams, made bed heads from doors, lamp stands from wine kegs, a coffee table from a baker’s chest. Leather armchairs sprawl by the fire, the bakery-furnished room makes a cosy games den, a garden terrace catches sunshine and birdsong. Wonderful rustic-chic bedrooms with snuggly beds flaunt their history: patterned tiles, a stone basin, translucent pictures in tiny bathroom windows. And in the sunny gallery where schoolchildren pored over Don Quixote, Roy serves beautiful plates of local lamb with wild mushrooms, whisky cake, Catalan wine… a feast to savour after exploring spectacular volcanic landscapes (by foot or hot air balloon), or cycling the Via Verde from Olot to Costa Brava beaches. A mini-escape for active families – remote yet close to Gerona.

Reviews

Roy and Goretti are great hosts making us so welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our stopover! The rectory has been lovingly restored and still retains a lot of the original features like the cooking facilities enjoyed by the priests of the past, the wonderful uneven wood flooring in the huge entrance and the beams! We enjoyed sitting by the wood burning stove reading - so relaxing. Good food, comfortable rooms - enjoy it.

Our stay at La Rectoria was one of the highlights of our trip. Clearly a labor of love, the building has been thoughtfully restored with respect for its history and also for guests’ comfort (they did not skimp on the mattresses). We loved being in the peaceful, quiet countryside with access to the via verde just down the driveway. Roy and Goretti are wonderful hosts, generous with suggestions and information about the region. The food was delicious—we ended up staying for dinner every night, and we loved Goretti’s wine recommendations as well. Would return in a heartbeat.

Superb in every detail. The cuisine is excellent, the rooms clean, well-designed, airy and well-lit, the people friendly and interested in their guests. The location, right beside the Olot-Girona cycle track means peace, no traffic, and a great stop-off point for cyclists or walkers. We stayed for a weekend and will definitely return.

I had been planning this weekend for ages, it had to be a really special present for my mother, and it was perfect! The house is stunning, the surroundings are spectacular, Roy, Goretti and Sylvester are charming and the food is to die for! In all, we had a brilliant time, and we cannot wait to repeat the experience! And, I have to say, that we were quite a difficult party: 7 grown ups, 2 babies, 1 toddler and 2 dogs!!!! Good job Lawsons!!!!

We had a fantastic stay with Goretti and Roy at La Rectoria. This was due to a combination of an incredible setting, the fantastically finished La Rectoria, great food and above all, Goretti and Roy’s hospitality. We were made to feel instantly welcome and this continued throughout our stay. I will be recommending to all my family and friends!

Local points of interest from Roy Lawson

  • Take a brisk walk in the heart of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park, a 10km route through the lushly wooded volcanic landscape which takes in Santa Margarida with its chapel nestling in its crater and the quarried remains of El Croscat.
  • Fageda d'en Jordà, the beech forest made famous through the writings of the Catalan artist Joan Maragall, a cathedral of green in summer and temple of gold in the autumn.
  • The medieval quarter of Santa Pau with its 13th Century castle and porticoed market square and gothic church. The east side of the old town offers splendid views down the valley. Santa Pau is also famous for its fesols (haricot beans).
  • The more mountainous Alta Garrotxa to the north of the county offers spectacular walking itineraries which include an old drover's road.
  • Depending on your purse you can have a menu from 10€ at the local agricultural co-op or dine at one of two michelin starred restaurants in La Garrotxa.
  • Take advantage of the via verde cycle path right next to La Rectoria. If you don't have your own bicycle we can help you arrange bike rental and for them to be delivered to you here at La Rectoria.
