Nature lovers rejoice! Twenty minutes from the industrial fringes of Gerona, in the foothills of the Pyrenées, lies the tranquil Llémena valley… steeply wooded hillsides, soaring and singing birds and a rather satisfying air of being ‘undiscovered’. Joan and Montse have converted their 17th-century masia with considerable flair and go out of their way to ensure everyone has a memorable stay. There’s space to roam, a lovely pool, barbecues for guests to use, corners to escape to, marvellously well-equipped communal areas and oodles for children – a sweet outdoor play area; a room stacked with games and toys for the odd rainy day. The apartments, each with outside space, have bold splashes of ochre, terracotta or lilac on the walls, alongside much rustically exposed stone. Bathrooms and kitchens are perfectly functional, and if you don’t fancy cooking every night (who does on holiday?) there are five good restaurants close by. Walkers, mountain bikers, art lovers (Dalí country), families and peace seekers will love this.
