The Experience

So many thoughtful details here on the hillside – it’s welcoming, unpretentious and really conveys the love Sue and Ben have for Spain – and India. On the ground floor find the living/dining room and kitchen, open plan so everybody can join in with cooking under the vaulted ceiling. Upstairs is another living area, kitchenette and the twin bedrooms; on the top floor you have two more en suite doubles, accessed via separate exterior staircases – super for those wanting more privacy.

La Vall de Santa Creu is fascinating. The village square where folk used to do their washing and collect their spring water is still the beating heart of the place for celebrations and fiestas. Not much has changed in its rambling streets as it is protected by being in a National Park.

Wander to the village restaurant which has a pleasant garden for eating outdoors; there may be a concert or an exhibition on at the new cultural centre afterwards. Walk to the beach or drive five minutes and you’re in the bustling port with bobbing boats and colourful fishing nets, plus diving, snorkelling and windsurfing.

Reviews

Tucked away in a peaceful village with an excellent restaurant. We loved walking up to the monastery and down to the beach, but especially sitting in the lovely garden. Very comfortable and highly recommended.

Lou, Sussex

We had a fabulous week’s stay at Casa de la Fuente, the valley is so beautiful, and the house is very charming. Highlights of our week were walking up to San Pere de Rodes monastery where we had a fabulous lunch, swimming & snorkeling at the local beach, a trip to Cadaques and watching the swallows on the top balcony. During our week, we watched swallow chicks in a nest being fed and eventually fledge. We’ll return to this beautiful and tranquil spot.

La Vall is the most enchanting of places; a beautifully kept house & garden in a tiny village perched on the hillside near Port de la Selva, a delightfully pretty, unspoilt, part of the Costa Brava. We went in the spring & loved the sun terrace for catching the warm sun & the flowers in the garden, but there are shady corners for relief in high summer & it would have been perfect in the heat too. There’s an exceptionally large & cool dining room/kitchen & any number of hill walks nearby to enjoy, as well as the sea & the football/tennis club at the foot of the hill. We had a magical time.

We are just packing up and all talking about how much we love your house and the area, unknown to us and we would love to return. The children were at the tennis club everyday. I went on amazing walks and swims, and Peter celebrated his 67th and retirement. A really good time and it felt fantastic to really relax away from the UK.

Casa de la Fuente is a work of love by the owners, Sue and Ben, and their family. Since 1975, they saw the striking beauty and simplicity of this area, the most northeastern Mediterrean coast of Spain. They worked in the house improving and adding new rooms, renewed the garden and built new terraces. It is located in a unique place, by the village water fountain, which was once the heart of this small community as it provided the most essential good to live there. Groups and families will find here a great place to enjoy fun times on holidays

Location

The neighbourhood

The village restaurant is two minutes’ walk from your door. For shopping, bars and more food drive to Port de la Selva in five minutes and Llanca in ten. The dramatic monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is worth the slog uphill, has a great restaurant and stages concerts. In summer many villages in Girona have music festivals – Perelada, 20 minutes’ drive away, is particularly good.

Local points of interest from Sue Mackworth-Praed

  • Casa de la Fuente is on the edge of the village of La Vall de Santa Creu, which overlooks the wild and beautiful valley.
  • Enjoy a nice meal at the restaurant and bar with terrace and beer garden in the village, open mid-June to mid-September.
  • In the spring and early summer nature lovers will enjoy walking in the valley, which is full of beautiful birds - Hoopoes,, Golden |Orioles, Bee Eaters, and wonderful wild flowers particularly in May and June..
  • Enjoy a day out at the beach, just a few minutes away by car (or 15 minutes on foot). Great snorkeling and rock pooling.
  • From the house, one can admire the famous Romanesque monastery, San Pere de Rodes (now floodlit every night).
  • Port de la Selva and its excellent restaurants and shops is only 2 miles from the house.- and still unspoilt, no high rise. Many medieval towns and villages and Romanesque churches and monasteries within an hour's distance.

Introducing

Sue Mackworth-Praed

Sue and Ben have had this magical place as their second home since 1975, having lived and worked in Madrid in the 70s and 80s. When they bought it the village still had no running water and the roads were unpaved. They first met their friends and neighbours when villagers came to the spring each day to gossip and do laundry. Today the couple, their three grown up children and the rest of the family still holiday here each August.
