Chez Papa Barcelona

Bed & Breakfast

Eclectic, quirky, kitsch – and wonderfully sociable, thanks to French host Hervé. Spot the Sagrada Familia’s spire from the sixth floor…

Rooms sleep 2 – 3

Welcome to a jolly mix of eclecticism and bonhomie up on the fifth floor of this block of flats in the early 20th-century Eixample mode – Hervé’s B&B. French, opinionated and extrovert, Hervé is devoted to organic foods and wines and ensures that breakfasts (with grand music) at the round table are as entertaining as can be – open souls and creative people will be happy. Find a colourful hotchpotch of flea market finds and more: decorative tiled floors have been revived, second shutters and soundproofing minimize noise, the winter wood-burning stove adds a cosy glow, and essential oils – verbena, pine – waft the air. The bedrooms are dotty and inviting and the décor could be that of your grandmother’s house – but for the wildly creative addition of hand-painted walls. Mattresses are firm, bedsteads may be flimsy, shower rooms are small, simple and not so good for the elderly. It’s a grand, view-filled position, and there’s a metro close by to whisk you into the lovely maze of tiny streets and leafy squares of the old town.

Staying at Chez Papa is a great experience and an excellent choice when visiting Barcelona for three or four days if you want somewhere which is a bit different. The room was comfortable and quiet and breakfast was delicious. It is very well placed, close to the metro and within easy walking distance of many of the city's attractions. Herve was an excellent host and he gave good advice and recommendations for places to eat. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Herve.

Staying with Hervé was the best decision we could have made! Not only do you get a unique place to stay with a truly quirky feel and the most comfortable bed we have slept in for as long as I can remember, but you get Hervé as your host. He has a passion for the good things in life and he presents them to you on the breakfast table. Merci beaucoup Hervé!

We enjoyed the communal breakfast , a sumptuous feast with Herve enjoying the conversations of his guests and an excellent guide to his city. Our room was comfortable, quirky and quiet,, the bathroom more than adequate and we soon felt part of the place with its elevated view of the streets below and conveniently close to many of the main attractions. Being such a sociable and comfortable character, Herve helped us to get our bearings. It was easy to get to Gaudi's compelling, extravagant building site nearby and even the local bus station on our departure. Great location, lovely man. Thank you.

Roger, Dorchester

Warmly welcomed to his beautiful home where we met fellow guests around a breakfast table piled high with delicious organic food. Nothing was too much trouble and the location is perfect.

Chez Papa is must for anyone visiting Barcelona. Herve is warm and welcoming, a fascinating character who has created a beautifully eclectic home from home. It's location is perfect, only a short walk from the centre, but in a quiet neighborhood with cute and trendy cafes to grab your morning coffee. The breakfast was delightful, local, fresh and plentiful. Our room was huge, with a small balcony and the perfect temperature even at the height of summer. Thank you for being the perfect host, we will be back! Tess & Lucie

We loved this shabby chic B&B. The decor is arty, eclectic, bohemian and a bit quirky. The room was very comfortable with an effective and quiet a/c unit. The bathroom was not en suite but just over the corridor and exclusive for our use. Herve was a wonderful host. He greeted us with a quick run though the top Barcelona sights over a glass of wine, provided lovely simple breakfasts and other than that left us to our own devices but seemed always to be about if needed. The B&B is in a great location, lovely local bars and restaurants but within easy reach of the centre. Perfect :-)

Just had my second visit to Hervé's fantastic B&B. Position is great, ten min walk from airport train at Passeig de Gracia or to Sagrada Familia or 2 mins to metro to old town. Make sure you eat in one evening. First time, octopus stew with a bottle of cava, this time baked turbot with a local dry white. 3 courses for €30 with wine and great company, good value. Probably not ideal for families - I'm not sure I'd bring my kids here until there were a bit older - but if travelling solo, with a partner or a group of friends, couldn't find a better place.

Definitely not for everyone but I can only say we had a great time at chez papa.Quirky is an over used word but definitely what you would say about Nerves bed and breakfast.A disciple of organic food his breakfasts are an education Herve is fun and entertaining a guy I would have liked to go for a beer with.Rooms are not for everyone but so comfy and a great sleep our rooms were not on suite but the bathrooms just outside the rooms are " exclusive" to you. I would definitely recommend chez Papa just don't ask for sausages and bacon for breakfast!!! Only joking Herve

Charlie, Glasgow

Me and my daughter had a wonderful stay. Herve was very nice and helpful and it was Fun to Wales up to Music and meet the other guest during breakfast. If you want something different, then stay here. The location is perfect and Street is very nice.

Nathascja, Copenhagen

Hervé is a very gracious host. We ordered dinner - and we had a feast. some other guests joined in around the round table, all served with organic wine. The location is perfect, near Metro and La Sagrada Familia.

Isabel, Portimão

Quirky, arty little place. The rooms are bohemian/basic, but Hervé's welcome was superb. Breakfasts were organic and good, and arrival was marked with a nice glass of wine. Our room (Bailen) was fine and looked out over a tree-lined street; comfortable bed. The cupboards etc were a little too rough and ready, one needing care to open... Our bathroom was v pretty in an arty way but a little underlit - accessing shower safely took attention. A bit more investment in furnishings, bedroom lighting and bedroom cleanliness would make things A1. Good value, excellent host, bohemian atmosphere.

Pete, Birmingham

This is a wonderful B&B if you like interesting conversation over a delicious breakfast, comfortable rooms and recommendations for the local area. Great location, easy to walk and see all the amazing Gaudi and other delights of Barcelona.

This is the second year running I have stayed at Chez Papa, and as before it was enjoyable. Herve is a great host, and after being gently revived by jazz (that gradually increases in volume) the mornings begin with a finely curated breakfast of organic produce - honey, cheese, bread, fruit, and other wonderful finds - that sets you up until early afternoon.

Aldo, Bristol

A Special Place! Jazz/world music ushers you (not too early!) into the convivial dining room, where there is a meeting of the nations around Herve's lovely round breakfast table. In the 5 nights we stayed, the majority were English, but there were also Russian, German and Swiss - some families, some couples. Relaxed, welcoming and rather eccentric it is; sterile and impersonal it is not. Herve is a lovely host and the position of the flat is handily central, although it is noisy at night if the windows are open. An engaging host, apartment and city.

Sophia, London

From the aromatic welcome and the first sight of our eclectic room the whole stay was a delight. Herve is a thoughtful and imaginative host. The communal breakfast lead us through local delicacies and expanded horizons. A great place to stay. He helped us track down a local potter we'd been looking for and rang to arrange a visit for us...and recommended a great local restaurant. We'd always look to stay here if in Barcelona, a special place.

Tim, Bexhill on sea

We've just returned from a five night stay at Chez Papa. From the moment you step inside, Herve is a warm and welcoming host. The accommodation is a mixture of old Spanish, French and surreal deco which enhances your trip. Herve makes excellent recommendations of restaurants but most of all, his kindness and interest in his guests wellbeing is paramount. He organised a small champagne (organic of course) soirée for my husbands 40th birthday which led to a great evening with our fellow guests, Herve generously providing nibbles. It's not sterile, but it all adds to the experience. We'll be back

Unusual and fascinating place to stay. Yummy breakfasts, wonderful local information from Herve, perfect position for exploring Barcelona. Delicious organic wine and honey available. Really comfortable beds.

Staying at Chez Papa is like knowing someone in Barcelona, someone who makes you a delicious breakfast and gives you invaluable tips about his city. The location is perfect, walking distance to many things but in a residential area.

A brilliant location, lovely B&B in the Eixample area of Barcelona. Sagrada Familia is an easy walk, and La Rambla is a 15 minute stroll. Herve is a fantastic host, the breakfasts are simple but delicious with organic produce and international flair around his large round table. We loved it here and found it easy and welcoming at all times - we popped back for a seista every afternoon and it was easy to come and go.

This is a great little find and well situated for a stay in Barcelona, being midway between the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera. The B&B itself is relaxed and comfortable and Herve, the host, is knowledgeable and makes every effort possible to make you feel at home and get the best from your stay. Breakfast is a delight and a great way to swap tips and feedback on places to go and visit. A truly fantastic place to stay and one that we will definitely stay at again.
