Extraordinary! This is definitely not up our usual street, and way out of the comfort zone of many. But who could resist the fun, the quirk, the originality and lively, well-travelled Juan Carlos? Architecturally it is interesting: the unusual structure with large windows floats over a garage forecourt near the motorway, for all the world like a stranded ocean liner. The attention to detail inside is absolute, from coloured loo roll to match the bathroom tiles, to 24-hour bar snacks and advice about the next leg of your journey, and a gift paper bag for you to fill at the shop. Bedrooms are not huge, but well-designed and each has a theme with photos and decoration to match. Workaholics can use the bar or cafeteria, stacked with travel books and locals dropping in to buy bread or have a coffee, so there’s much movement and bustle. Those who want more than a snack can nip to PizzaPizza, where the puddings are homemade and walls are covered with pop art. Sawday fans may be surprised but they will be very comfy and well looked after – one nighters are welcomed and it’s a great stopover for those travelling south.
