The Experience

The noisiest noise around here is cicada hum – and birdsong. The road stops at the village; remote, rustic, charming. This is a place of simple pleasures – canoeing on the river, forest walking, exploring Romanesque churches, visiting the spectacular gorge at Palancas. The old farmhouse reflects this rusticity but there are deep comforts too. Floors are oak, stairs creaky, windows shuttered, walls a pleasing mix of stone and plaster. The beamed bedrooms are furnished in elegant country style – authentic bedheads, embroidered covers, muslin curtains, warm colours, a walnut wardrobe, an antique wash stand. Two delightful bedrooms tuck themselves under the eaves and the top-floor suite is heaven: spot deer from the windows, gaze at the stars from your tub. In the early evening, glass in hand, spot vultures from the long wooden balcony that overlooks the lush garden and hills. Gentle owners Javier and Isabel serve lovely meals with produce from their organic garden, and join their guests for supper. With no television, conversation lingers well into the night. Special.

Reviews

Wonderful suit in a quiet picturesque village. Play park nearby for kids. Javier and Isabel super professional but also kind and warm hearted hosts. None of the places we stayed at were cheap, but this one in particular stood out as offering great value for money.

This is a wonderful, charming place. It is a perfect 1.5 hour journey from Santander and the ferry to the UK. Incredible scenery as you approach and a perfect little hamlet for a stroll. We had a warm welcome from Javier and Isabel who were very helpful especially with onward travel through Spain and which roads to avoid! We recommend you eat dinner there as the food was deliciously Spanish and it was great dining with other guests despite not all able to speak Spanish/English. Delicious varied breakfast including cherries from the tree outside. Highly recommended for a tranquil escape.

This was one of our best ever holidays! We spent three weeks here and felt part of the family. It is a beautiful, peaceful place and from our bedroom we watched roe deer in the field. The weather was warm and we explored the wonderful landscape. The roads to Burgos and Bilbao are minutes away and there are endless places of interest . Isabelle and Javier are lovely people who work hard to look after their guests and Isabelle's home-made food is delicious. Some nights we all walked to the local bar under a starry sky. You will love it, book now while there is still space!

What a find. Blissfully peaceful in a lovely little hamlet with pretty (old) church. Tina the dog joined us for our walk before dinner, Charming building - restored rather than renovated with lovely wooden floorboards. We had the first floor room El Albrego with a balcony and pretty view from the bathroom. Javier and his wife are charming hosts. The food was good and the home made digestifs very welcome indeed. The home made lemon yoghurt drink for breakfast was particularly noteworthy. It's beautiful in this region. Come and escape and visit the local villages and go for some beautiful walks.
