Bed & Breakfast

Pastoral peace and serenity in Basque Country. Mikel is unfailingly affable, rooms are rustic yet comfortable, the views are breathtaking

This is a fine old Basque farmhouse, and Mikel, your unfailingly affable host, has undertaken a laborious and sympathetic restoration. Steep winding roads deliver you to peace and serenity; watch the early mists lift from the valley below and an idyllic pastoral scene unfold. The ancient wooden structure of the house is revealed in beams, walls and ceilings; from each window are breathtaking views across pine trees, mountains and stunning glimpses of two parques naturales. Bedrooms here are rustic affairs but with plenty of comfort, thanks to plump duvets and hydromassage showers, while shelved, curtained alcoves make simple storage space; the east-facing suite on the second floor is impressive. Stride from the door for hours through bird-filled fecundity, or simply stroll through the budding botanical garden under the shade of fruit and walnut trees. Return to a warming wood-burner in winter and be comforted by one of Mikel’s famous organic dishes; try port-flavoured chicken and raisins, or quails’ legs in chocolate sauce, with robust local wines. Friendly, authentic, charming and special.

3rd visit, drop by every couple of years and as good as ever, my fault as always by not telling Mikel that I’m having dinner with enough notice whoops, but he did still turnout a memorable supper. Courgette soup then Cod.

We came here straight from Bilbao airport - getting used to the car, motorways and narrow roads and turns was fun, but worth the effort. It's a great remote location, the only thing to disturb the peace was birdsong and cow bells. The views from a bench by the door look down over the valley. Mikel is a friendly host and his cooking is authentic Basque and superb. The building has been restored with great details and he creates a relaxed convivial atmosphere.

Ametzola is a great place to stay. My wife and I had such a great time and Mikel was so welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. The building and rooms are beautiful and the food is absolutely fantastic, if you stay here be sure to stay for the food (very reasonable and delicious and local)! Thank you, Mikel for your wonderful hospitality we will be back! C and LJ

Biennially I visit Spain and use Sawday’s Special Places to find exquisite properties. In 2017, we selected Mikel Azaola’s home on our rural trek. To this day, we warmly recall his hospitality & conversations with our host-scholar late into the night. It was off-season & the only guests. Mikel greeted us after a long day working in the yard, & made delicious duck for dinner and breakfast in his chef’s kitchen, while regaling us with stories of the region, world politics/economics, Basque history and local sights. Of all hosts, we miss him the most & hope to return—he made that trip perfect.

Ametzola è veramente "a special place to stay" e avremo molto piacere a ritornarci. Grazie ancora Mikel!

Mikel, the owner, is a gentle giant. He tries to please. Breakfast was substantial and the dinners we had on the two nights we stayed were delicious. We could always ask for more food but we did not need to. Mikel willingly made us a cup of tea without charge when we got back from sightseeing. Please note that he does not take bank card payments as he does not own the card machine. We spent a happy two days and nights in his renovated farmhouse and enjoyed chatting to him. We would willingly go back to his place next time we are in the area.

Sorry the date is completely wrong! I have taken too long to give feedback. We stayed en-route to Bilbao and cannot stress how much we enjoyed staying. The food and wine were superb - also many choices of olive oil with a thorough explanation from our host. The accommodation very high quality. We enjoyed a good walk up the hill seeing a fox at the top.

Superb setting, very comfortable and with a larger than life host in Mikel! Mikel takes an obvious pride in the Basque region and its produce, carefully explaining the origin of all the food items and drinks. Evening meals and breakfast are delicious and generous. Very good value and we found it easily having read the directions beforehand and by following the signs.

This place is very special because of Mikel - a truly wonderful, warm, entertaining, and unique host. His cooking is sublime, he is utterly generous, and he makes you feel right at home. It's worth travelling out of Bilbao to visit and we will go back for the third time because Mikel and his food are so tempting. We hope only the best for Mikel - he's one in a million.

Beautifully restored old farmhouse and the most delightful host. Mikel's cooking is superb, offering the provenance of every thing he served. One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Word of warning, make sure you print off the directions from the website, the location is amazing but it's not easy to find!

Wonderful place with really comfortable beds in pretty and authentic rooms , excellent views and superb dinners. The host is friendly and lovely and the whole experience was one I definitly wish to repeat soon.

This place is very unique. Miquelon is a wonderful welcoming host who has the most fabulous place. The directions to get here on his website need to be printed out and brought with you. He is a fabulous chef. My wife and I ate two dinners with him making our vacation so special. We learned of new wines and special cheeses that we need to purchase when we get home. His place is well worth the drive from Bilbao. Very, very highly recommended

Mikel and his house are a delight. The climb up into the hills to reach it is well rewarded by stunning views, wine-like air, and the beautiful and spotless accommodation. Mikel has spent decades loving restoring the place, and one feels priviledged to be part of Mikels success in marrying traditional Basque design with superb functionality. We can't recommend it highly enough.

September 2012. Mikel and his home are still as you and earlier reviewers describe. Total peace allied with the most comfortable and delightful rooms makes this a 'must stay' in the Basque country. Mikel is just the most charming and delightful host. The problem is you won't want to leave.

We love it here! This was our second stay with Mikel - such a charming, urbane and interesting chap, nothing is too much trouble. The house is fascinating, authentic 500 year old rustic Spain, comfortable beds and excellent bathrooms - food delicious and varied. We stayed for three nights and Mikel made suggestions of places to visit, and provided a local OS type map. We were not disappointed! The general area is stunning, and visits to the iron foundry and beret making factory really interesting. Local food is robust, and I so enjoyed local cider poured from above the bartender's head!

Mikel is the perfect host and the most wonderful cook. The house has been beautifully renovated in a most beautiful setting. The room delightful, very roomy and the bed was so comfortable. Mikel helped us to choose interesting places to visit and we felt we had become good friends by the time we left three days later. We will definitely be staying with Mikel again when we are in this area. An added bonus is that it is only a 45 minute drive away from the ferry at Bilbao. Highly recommended. Do visit Mikel, you will not regret it.
