This is a fine old Basque farmhouse, and Mikel, your unfailingly affable host, has undertaken a laborious and sympathetic restoration. Steep winding roads deliver you to peace and serenity; watch the early mists lift from the valley below and an idyllic pastoral scene unfold. The ancient wooden structure of the house is revealed in beams, walls and ceilings; from each window are breathtaking views across pine trees, mountains and stunning glimpses of two parques naturales. Bedrooms here are rustic affairs but with plenty of comfort, thanks to plump duvets and hydromassage showers, while shelved, curtained alcoves make simple storage space; the east-facing suite on the second floor is impressive. Stride from the door for hours through bird-filled fecundity, or simply stroll through the budding botanical garden under the shade of fruit and walnut trees. Return to a warming wood-burner in winter and be comforted by one of Mikel’s famous organic dishes; try port-flavoured chicken and raisins, or quails’ legs in chocolate sauce, with robust local wines. Friendly, authentic, charming and special.
