Cortijo Padre Avilés

Shipshape style from owners who are keen sailors and around if needed. Activities proliferate; views out to sea and Africa are awesome

If it’s solitude you’re after, Padre Avilés is one of the quietest, remotest and most relaxing spots in Andalucía, up in the hills 20 minutes from Málaga – and half an hour from the airport. It’s a converted 17th-century convent steeped in history. And behind its walls lie seven excellently equipped and spacious apartments, each with its own front door and private terrace. From one you slip straight out via French windows to the pool. Rooms have a nautical bent; the owners are super-keen sailors. And ideal hosts, very much around should you need them. Everything is shipshape: bedrooms light and airy, bedding crisp and white, mattresses orthopaedic; bathrooms have decent sinks and pretty mosaics; the cabin-style kitchen-diners have immaculate white sofas. Families will not want to leave: there are two separate play areas, bikes, tennis courts (coaching in summer), hammocks and two pools. Take a well-worn path round the 180-acre estate scattered with olive and almond trees, or make for the national park just up the road. Views out to sea are awesome; on a clear day you can see Africa.

We stayed at Padre Aviles for two weeks to celebrate two significant birthdays with our children and grandchildren. With six families (24 people from 1 to 65) to accommodate finding a suitable place was not easy but the search was worth it. With five separate apartments in the converted stable block and one other apartment each family had their own space, with an option for group meals. With a good sized pool, in which the children spent most of their time, we had a fantastic holiday. Claire the owner could not have been more helpful. A memorable holiday in a beautiful and quiet location .

We stayed here in the three bed apartment with our two boys aged 1 and 4. Big pluses: booking was quick and easy. Claire recommended a car hire company that met us off the flight, took us straight to our car with zero delay. Claire also offered to do a supermarket shop for us so that milk, nappies, wipes...all the baby stuff and a complete food shop, wine etc already in our apartment for us. That was genius. The villas are lovely, the pool great for kids and adults. Very clean. Very relaxing. Perfect for young families. Really welcoming hosts. Near to beach, Malaga, botanical gardens. All good

We had a great holiday at Padres Aviles. The apartment was lovely with a great view. It is in such a peaceful location and the views are stunning. We traveled with out 18month old son who absolutely loved the place with its beautiful warm pool and toys galore. I would recommend this to anybody who wants to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet whilst being within driving distance of the vibrant beachfront and city of Malaga. Great holiday and great hosts!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Claire & David Parish

  • Beautiful 17th Century convent with the most amazing views surrounded by 180 acres of Olive and almond trees. Great for total peace and quiet but only 10 mins by car from the local town.
  • Unknown to most, Malaga (20 mins way) is a lovely city, with wonderful tapas restaurants, cafes and lots to visit. The new Muelle Uno in the port has recently opened offering a lovely stroll past yatchs, good shopping and restaurants.
  • Visit the Alcazaba, Picasso Museum, Malaga Cathedral. Or why not venture to the botanical gardens, El chorro, Nerja, Frigiliana. So much to do and see in Andalucia the list goes on.
  • We have wonderful pedestrianized promenades along the sea. Nothing nicer than sitting down having a Mojito or two and watching the restaurants preparing the sardines on the BBQs (old fishing boats) and seeing families out for their daily stroll.
  • For the keen sportsmen and women, we are perfectly situated for great walks, runs and bike rides with a local bike shop renting great bikes. Whether it be for training or more leisurely cycles. Or just dip into the 20 m pool for those daily lengths!
