The Experience

A medieval banquet wouldn’t look amiss in this secluded manor house set in olive groves and mountains. Hidden behind stone walls, the hotel – once a convent, a marquis’s mansion, a civil war barracks – feels like a rural Andalusian hamlet: citrus-dotted patios like village squares, swathes of white or earthy walls topped with terracotta; a pretty swimming pool; a huge events barn.

In the dining room a large, tasty breakfast is served by a roaring fire on chilly days. Bedrooms – so big they swamp four-posters – revel in history: romanesque columns, pigeonholes, a bath set in olive oil tanks, cattle mangers, chunky stone walls, a granary’s soaring vaulted ceilings… stunning. Tubs and showers are splendidly old-fashioned.

Beautifully rural, deliciously authentic and within reach of both beach and Sierra Nevada skiing – and if all the rustic finery isn’t grand enough, Granada’s Alhambra is 30kms down the road.

Reviews

I had a marvellous stay. Not only was the room very comfortable, but the food exceptional & original, and a wonderful wine list - over 200 references - with many local varieties included. I loved its authenticity, a real Andalusian Cortijo, and also its remoteness being in the middle of a deserted valley with beautiful views of Sierra Nevada. And yet, just a 20 minute drive from the Alhambra.

Fabulous in every way. The Cortijo del Marques has been delightfully and lovingly restored, and it feels luxurious while retaining its authenticity. The hosts were superb, with lovely touches such as welcoming us in the restaurant at 10.45pm after a delayed flight and providing hand-drawn guides to super walks in the olive-groves and almond trees that surround the property. We enjoyed the swimming pool with its amazing mountain views, our huge room in the former Stables and fabulous locally-sourced food and wine. We would love to return.

We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more. We had lots of planned to visit Granada and some of the nearby towns but as soon as we arrived we couldn't leave! We booked the Silo room which I really recommend - it's very private and the view is spectacular. The food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was delicious (we ate at the hotel on all 3 nights) and you can tell so much thought has gone into making the atmosphere relaxed while everyone works incredibly hard behind the scenes. I would love to return again one day, it's a very special place.

What an incredible place! My husband and I had the most wonderful stay at the Cortijo Del Marques and plan on returning every year for some much needed R & R. The hosts were so helpful and extremely welcoming. They made sure that we had the best possible stay and nothing was too much trouble. Silvia is amazing! I am a fussy vegetarian and was a bit nervous about food in Spain but she worked with the chef to make sure I enjoyed the fabulous 4 course dinner every night. It was complete indulgence and I loved every minute. Stunning place - cannot wait to return!

Having recently got married here and had the perfect weekend with family and friends, we can't recommend this hotel and the lovely owners enough. It's provides a beautiful away from it all experience and relaxed holiday. The service and food are really fantastic and we place a lot of value on good food and wine!. The rooms are all huge, stunning, individual and quiet. Lovely swimming pool to relax around. Perfect place for a long weekend/ week away from it all, or tied in with visiting Andalucia. We will definitely go back to stay!

Louise

Location

The neighbourhood

Surrounded by olives and large fields with views of the Sierra Nevada, this really does feel far away from everything - the wildlife is superb, particularly birds. Walks and cycles through this landscape will be thrilling and you can also ride a horse through it. The nearest restaurant is at Cubillas, about 10kms away; Granada is 30kms where you'll find plenty of restaurants and tapas bars.

Local points of interest from Silvia Roth-Bruggers

  • From 20:00–22:30, we serve a 3-course gourmet dinner menu for 35 EUR per person (29 EUR with half board) – and we also have an excellent wine and drinks list. The gourmet menu is 27 EUR for children over 12 (22 EUR with half board) for adult size portions.
  • enjoy the great country side around the Cortijo on horseback! We work with a nearby riding school which has well trained horses available for you. The price is 35 EUR per person for a tour of 2 hours, with a minimum of 2 riders.
  • We also have a couple of suggested walking and cycling trips, for which we have high quality KTM mountain bikes for rental. The charge is 10 EUR per tour per bike and 25 EUR for a family of four.
  • Even if you’re not interested in history or culture the Alhambra palaces in Granada should not be missed. It is a well preserved example of Moorish architecture with beautifully attended gardens that has maintained its allure and magic through the ages.
  • The Albayzín is the most interesting neighbourhood in Granada, consisting of narrow twisted alleys and hidden little squares; from most of which the view on the Alhambra will seem like a dream. Simply stroll through these beautiful and tranquil streets.
  • Don't miss a Flamenco performance in the gypsy caves of Sacramonte in Granada. We can recommend the cave of María La Canastera. They have daily live Flamenco Music and Dance Shows in a cave on the Sacromonte hill, near the Arab quarter.

Introducing

Silvia Roth-Bruggers

Silvia (from Austria) and Eliko (Dutch) are fabulous hosts, caring and attentive. They were both high level economists in Madrid until they bought the run-down building in 2010. They added more rooms and spruced it up before giving their jobs up and coming to live at the Cortijo with their young family. The staff are all very helpful and efficient.
