The Experience

At the end of the winding road are three cottages in a fabulous olive grove near the largest man-made lake in Andalusia. Water levels fluctuate and when it’s empty you can spot old buildings. Snug, simple and individual, each cottage has a private entrance and a courtyard; cheek by jowl, they interlink beautifully for larger groups. One is open-plan and flooded with light, another has old low ceilings and an inglenook feel; Perdiz and Liebre (our favourites) sport Moorish sofas. All are charming inside: terracotta tiles, white walls, bright fabrics, spotless bathrooms.

Stock up at traditional village shops from a bygone era and come back to fire up the barbecue or whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchens. Bask on a lounger by the pool and relish the views, or play pétanque on the sand court. No neighbours detract from the peace.

The nearest village, Fuentes de Cesna, is about 5 minutes by car or a short walk.

Reviews

What a lovely discovery, completely hidden in olive groves! I was intrigued by the property with its 3 interlinked very cosy cottages, each with its own courtyard decorated with some farm equipment from the old days and I loved chatting with the owners about anything and everything under the watchful eye of a stunning cross-eyed cat. This is nothing more than pure bliss.

Only 600 characters to describe this fabulous place! I cannot recommend highly enough. We had a wonderful, relaxing stay in Casita Perdiz - spacious, spotless & very comfortable with lots of lovely touches. Gillian & Marylynne such friendly, helpful, thoughtful hosts. You can easily spend the day relaxing by the glorious pool overlooking the olive groves, smells of lavender, jasmine, sweet figs abound, come late afternoon you’ll see swallows, then later bats swooping down for a drink. Pour yourself something cold from the poolside fridge, watch the sunset, then the wait for the stars… Heaven!

This was our third stay with Gillian and Marylynne and was as perfect as the previous two. It’s hard to overstate just how peaceful it is here sitting by the pool reading, dreaming or sipping an ice-cold fino. As before we stayed in Casita Perdiz. Very comfortable beds, great showers and a superbly equipped kitchen (with sharp knives!) which is a joy for those of us who like to travel with our Spanish cookbooks. We were the only guests this time which a shame for others but magical for us. Thank you so much Gillian and Marylynne. We will be back!

We had a wonderful stay at Las Rosas. The beds were so comfortable and large. The casita was perfect and had everything we needed. Gillian and Marylynne had stocked the kitchen with everything so there was no wasted time shopping and no buying of jars of mayo, jam, herbs, spices which would go to waste. There is a lively pool in the pretty garden. It was gorgeously peaceful. The time went too fast. Granada and Cordoba were amazing. We visited lots of beautiful places.

Comfortable, clean, welcoming. The Cortijo is quite remote, perfect for a relaxing time, but plan your trips carefully. We enjoyed going sightseeing and eating out during the daytime, returning to the Cortijo and its lovely pool late afternoon and preparing simple food for the evening. The owner's were obliging and helpful, but never obtrusive, with excellent guidance on directions where to park etc. We had a very delightful stay.

We had the most wonderful week at Cortijo Las Rosas staying in Casita Perdiz. It was our first visit to Spain and we will certainly be back. Cortijo Las Rosas is so peaceful and beautiful and we were able to really relax and enjoy our time together. The casita was so well equipped with very comfortable beds and fantastic showers. The owners, Gillian and Marylynne, are so hospitable and kind. Nothing was too much trouble and we would really recommend ordering the 'welcome basket' - it was filled with a great selection of food and drink and lasted us for ages. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

Cortijo las rosas is everything you dream about. It is beautiful, quit and romantic. A place where you get inspired. The nature is beautiful. And Gillian & Marylynne have created an environment that feels like home. With a lot of taste! We had such a great time there. Love Lenneke en Kai

Back from a wonderful stay at Cortijo Las Rosas. We arrived to a warm welcome from Gillian and Marylynne having followed their meticulous directions from Malaga. This was very helpful because this property is well and truly off the beaten track. A beautiful peaceful setting with amazing views, well presented accommodation decorated in simple moorish style. Welcome pack excellent and our hosts very helpful. Pool area and views perfect. We visited Iznájar, Fuentes De Cesna, Algarinejo and a day trip to Cordoba to visit the incredible Cathedral and the Palacio de Viana. Great holiday, back soon.

Our second visit in 4 years, even better than the first. A truly awesome experience on all levels, Gillian & Marylynne are 24/7 hostesses who care for your every request. The Casitas are beautifully kept, kitchens very well equipped and lots of thought given to extras such as bedding rugs, extra fridge and freezer space, even the loan of a sweater when in expected chilly takes the evening. This is located in rural Andulucia, among the olive groves down a tractor tract which will make you second guess your choice. Never fear there is gold at the end of that track!

We had a wonderful stay here. The apartment was lovely and we had everything we needed. Gillian and Marylynne were excellent hosts and nothing was too much trouble. If you’re looking for a peaceful and quiet location to relax then this is the place. There are lots of places to visit in the area, nice countryside and walks, hiring a car is essential. Lovely secluded location and still only an hour or so away from Cordoba, Granada and Malaga, all of which provide an authentic Andalucian experience. We highly recommend staying here.

We have just arrived home from a wonderful two weeks in Cortijo las Rosas. It would be hard to speak sufficiently highly of this very special place. Gillian and Marylynne are exceptional hosts - they were unfailingly kind and helpful throughout our two week stay. Our casita was beautiful - immaculately and sympathetically maintained, it really was a home from home for us all. Our children spent many happy hours in the delightful pool, while we had a welcome chance to read endless books while lying on the sun loungers. One highlight was our trip to the extraordinary hill top village of Zuheros

We stayed here after a hectic spell of sightseeing and we couldn't have picked a better place to unwind. Cortijo las Rosas is in an idyllic spot amongst olive groves with no near neighbours but village shops only a 20 minute walk away. Great to watch the swallows skimming the pool. Gillian and Marylynne are the perfect hosts, always on hand but never intrusive. The welcome pack of provisions was excellent as was the local information and routes to get to places. We stayed in Casita Liebre, beautifully furnished in a traditional style, it was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

Lucinda and Paddy, Norwich

Such a haven of peace and happiness. Gillian and Marylyne are really wonderful hosts: discreet and attentive to everyone’s comfort and needs. And our rental property: simply perfect (equipment, bedding, and really pleasant décor), so you feel very happy indoors… But how could you resist the beautiful pool boarded by olive trees!!! Inside and out, peace and happiness everywhere indeed.

The perfect getaway place. We first stayed at Las Rosas in 2010 and have been back about 5 times.Every visit has been magical, with lots of sun to go with the amazing views. There are 3 casitas which share a pool and a sun terrace, but there is plenty of room and it doesn't seem crowded. We've stayed in 2 of the 3 casitas, which are beautifully kitted out in a way that reflects the traditional style of rural Spain, but with large comfy sofas! There is an optional welcome pack which is excellent value for money. The owners, Marylynne & Gilly, live on site and are splendid hosts with lots of advice.

Bridget

Las Rosas is the perfect antidote to urban stress and email addiction. I absolutely love going there! I feel as if I've got younger each time. Favourite things include: early morning swims, a glass of wine at sunset, watching the swallows dip down to the pool, beautifully clean and comfortable bedrooms, lovely and dark at night, incredible starry skies, and so quiet that you can easily oversleep! One late spring visit, it was cold at night. So we fired up the wood stove and transformed the evening in minutes - more usually it's blissfully warm.Hilly walks with grand views.Highly recommended.

Peter

Not enough superlatives for this place! We stayed in Liebre with 2 young children and has the most amazing time. The weather was pretty poor, normally in a rental house that could be miserable, but not here; a cosy fire was roaring when we arrived, thick duvets, blankets and heating. The owners kit the fire for us everyday we went out, sucha thoughtful touch. The house is beautifully furnished and lit and I cannot wait to return. We explored lots in the local area, the owners had lots of recommendations to help us. Such good value too.

Helen, London

This is a wonderful location for a peaceful holiday, completely away from it all. My husband and I stayed here for two very relaxing weeks in April, during which time we both had significant birthdays. Gillian and Marylynne could not have been more helpful. They recommended restaurants, organised birthday meals and surprises and suggested lovely locations to visit. All the casitas are sympathetically decorated and maintained to a comfortable standard with private courtyards. From the pool and patio there are stunning views of olive groves on hillsides. It was a stunning place to stay.

Amanda

The casita Liebre at Cortjio Las Rosas was delightfully furnished to the highest standard. Great care had been taken to make the accommodation as comfortable as possible. The location is beautifully quiet with wonderful views. Gillian and Marylynne were very helpful in every respect even completing a supermarket visit because of our sunday arrival! They contributed invaluable information about the locale and the outstanding places one wants visit in Andalusia, while being discrete. The Casita's courtyard was perfect for sitting in the morning sun, or under the stars at night.

Stephen, St Ives

We have had a wonderful holiday in a beautiful location, everything thought about to make it home from home down to minute details , very well appointed comfortable apartments . Although rural very easy to get to lots of interesting places. Gillian and Mary Lynne were very helpful on local information including routes, parking and places to eat. The pool and garden surroundings were lovely and well maintained, very peaceful and tranquil. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you.

Bridget, Bristol

What a super place! Hidden away amongst the olive groves, a tranquil spot, lovely pool, well equipped & maintained casitas. Our hosts were charming and provide you with so much information about the local area you can really make the most of your holiday and do as much or as little (it was very hot!) as you want. Their directions invaluable! Perfect holiday for us and our daughter. We will be back and would wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful place.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can stroll through the olive groves or walk beside the lake - when the water level is low you can spot old olive mills, cortijos and bridges which were once hidden beneath the surface. It's a 15-20 minute drive to Iznájar, known as the magical village. High up on a hill top overlooking the lake it has a castle, churches, little village squares and a rich cultural heritage. Good restaurant too.

Local points of interest from Marylynne Morris & Gillian Purcell

  • From March through to August, pink flamingos arrive by their thousands at the nearby lakes of Fuente de Piedra...watch the new fledglings being ringed before they return to Africa in autumn!
  • ...alternate a sun-drenched day by the pool with an easy day trip exploring Granada’s Al-Hambra; Cordoba’s Mesquite; Antequera’s Torcal; Ronda’s Bullring or beaches on the Costa del Sol...
  • Walk the spectacular "Camino del Rey" suspended above El Chorro Gorge (booking necessary)... Spring birdlife all about you.
  • Feast at our nearby restaurant “Casa Piolas” featured in Jon Clarke’s “Dining Secrets of Andalucia”:..”you wonder not when, but how many Michelin stars the place deserves”......
  • Explore our local senderos (walks) especially the “mesa” where recent archaeological excavations by the University of Granada have found “possibly the best preserved chalcolithic wall elevations in Europe”.
  • April means exploring our arroyo for wild orchids; flinging your windows open and listening to the nightingales - or hold out until May for punnets of fat, juicy cherries from our neighbours Piedad and Paco.

Introducing

Marylynne Morris & Gillian Purcell

Sisters Marylynne and Gillian, delightful, helpful, generous, bought the old farmhouse after falling in love with the vastness and ruggedness of southern Spanish landscapes - it reminded them of their childhood in South Africa. They are devoted to the place, their guests and their animals.
