In a particularly beautiful part of the Sierra de Grazalema. one of Spain’s finest natural parks, the Tambor del Llano does it credit. The young brainchild of enthusiastic environmentalist Carmen, it’s a sustainably run farm, combining cork oak forest and grazing for native breeds, with an agricultural warehouse transformed into a modern, minimalist B&B/hotel at its heart. Vivacious Carmen’s also a fabulous cook and with her team produces memorable meals – of course the food is home grown and local, and the wine organic. So, Slow foodies will love it here as will horse-riders walkers and birders – you wind along small roads then a dirt track to reach the farm so can set off directly into the wilds, though views from the front terrace are hard to leave. Indoors, all is simple, uncluttered and comfortable: polished concrete floors, whitewashed walls, functional style furniture and plenty of communal space. Bedrooms each have a private terrace area, very good beds and linen, and deluge showers in pristine white bathrooms. The feel is wonderfully isolated but Grazalema is close and Ronda 25k away.
