The Experience

A great, relaxed place for coastal country lovers to simply unwind, with masses of space and separate play areas for young and older children. Swim in the safely-fenced pools, barbecue in the shade of trees and climbing vines, stroll the Citrus Walk or simply sit in the herb gardens – don’t forget to take binoculars to see storks and raptors flying overhead.

Splash out on the largest cortijo with its two sitting rooms, four-poster beds and double-ended baths – also its own terrace and pool. The casitas are simpler in style and one has access for those with limited mobility. You’re near to many local beaches for surfing, the hiking and biking is superb and you can book up dolphin and whale-watching safaris.

Arrival shopping baskets and bilingual child-minding can be arranged or even massage therapy. Day trips to Cadiz, Tangiers, Seville or Jerez are popular and there are excellent restaurants, shops and markets a short drive away.

Reviews

Our family spent an amazing week at Finca El Sueno. The kitchen facilities were excellent (very sharp knives which is unusual for self-catering) and we enjoyed wiling away the evenings on the terrace as the sun set. Our toddler loved the play area and the pool as well as collecting fallen oranges and lemons. The grounds are beautiful and it feels very rural even though Vejer de la Frontera is a short drive away. Highly recommended

Will, London

We loved our fortnight at El Cortijo. We needed a relaxing break and the secluded swimming pool with its beautiful flowers was the perfect spot to cool down on hot days and recharge our batteries. The house was spacious and comfortable and we made full use of the barbecue and outside dining area. Nearby Vejer is a lovely hilltop town with a wealth of bars and restaurants - a great place to spend an evening or in our case 3. The beaches are stunning and we didn't see half of them. We'll have to go back!

It is the simplest decision ever to return to El Sueno, and needless to say that in August we made that decision and returned for our third time! The minute we walk through that front door into Mimosa, all the routine and pace of back at home just disappears. We literally flick a switch and revert to traditional Spanish pace - sleep late, eat late, swim late - and the tranquillity of El Sueno allows you to do all those things with extraordinary ease. The owners are just super – so helpful and any issues there is someone there to help as quick as a flash. We’ll 110% be going back!

What I loved about Finca El Sueño is the respect Sean & Tanya have for wild life. This is a unique and protected area and they have created a wonderful garden as well as an island that is now a nesting place for birds of prey & aquatic species in the marshes. One can either marvel nature from your terrace or wander around the 8 acres and take in the beauty of the place.

We stayed in the Finca at Cortijo El Sueno. The farmhouse has 4 lovely double bedrooms all ensuite and is tastefully decorated with all that you could need for a wonderfully relaxing holiday. A lovely terrace adjoining the barbecue area allows for long lazy evenings eating and chatting. The private pool is a good size and sits in a very picturesque area of the gardens adjoining the property. The Finca is well equipped and staying two weeks we had the luxury of a clean and replacement of bedding and towels on the middle weekend. the nearby town of Vejer de la Fronteras is very picturesque.

Tony, Launceston

We stayed in Mimosa and had a wonderful time. The house was clean, spacious and comfortable. The garden and surroundings were charming, there are some lovely cats and the hosts were very helpful and efficient. There is masses to do in the local area. The beaches are fabulous. We will most certainly go back!

alice, Kingston upon Thames

Beautiful peaceful private estate close to perfect sandy beaches and charming villages. Great holiday with 2 small children

Una, Scotland

We had a wonderful holiday here with our nearly-3-year old. Casa Pimienta was very well equipped, beds comfortable, lovely cross breezes even in the heat. We loved the privacy of the gardens but also the chance to meet other families by the pool. Wendy house, slides, swings were much used too! Lots of fantastic beaches nearby with great lunch options. Loved Vejer and fish market at Barbate, El Palmar and Zahara. We're going back next year!

Fiona, London

We had a lovely few days staying at El Sueno. The hosts were very helpful providing lots of information on the area, directions to the finca, places to shop etc. We stayed in Almendra and it was so quiet and peaceful. There were other people about although we didn't really see anyone and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The house is equipped with everything you need and is comfortable and clean. It's situation is lovely and the pool area was also very nice. We would like to return sometime as there is so much to see in the surrounding area. Good value.

Kay

This was a charming place to stay while discovering the Costa de Luz. If this place is available, take it!!

We've just returned from an absolutely wonderful stay at Alcornoque Casita with our two young children. It was absolutely gorgeous and we loved afternoons by the pool followed by evening BBQs on the terrace in our lovely garden. The local beaches are simply stunning - miles and miles of untouched golden sand which took our breath away. The local town of Vejer was beautiful with lots of fabulous restaurants. We had a really relaxing stay and are already planning to go back next year.

Zoe

Great family holiday. Stayed in the spacious 2 bed Mimosa with my 2 year old son. Toddler friendly with all the things you need for a little one (cot, chair, potty, etc). Great to have lovely grounds to run around plus the play area and pool became essential daily routines! Really beautiful beaches close by, and the town of Vejer great fun to run around. Relaxing quiet spot. Hardly heard the other 3 families staying at the time; but managed to get the kids together at the end of our week. Perfect if you've got kids and are happy to self cater and want somewhere to totally chill out.

Faye

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week over the summer and I can honestly say we had one of the best holidays of our lives. The casitas are perfect for a couple - you have the privacy of a villa but the comfort of a B&B. The views are spectacular and your are moment away from Vejer, Barbate and some of the best beaches in the world - wild and unspoilt. The hosts are warm and welcoming and will do everything to accommodate you. This is escapism, culture, natural beauty and peace - all in one. Go!

Georgia

The cottage and its surroundings were the perfect setting for an incredibly relaxing holiday, it really couldn't have been any better. We had everything we needed for a really comfortable stay, everything had been organised so thoughtfully, from the blankets on the sofa, the sun loungers on our terrace that stayed sunny in to the evening and the swimming pool that had the perfect balance of sun and shade and was protected from the wind on the one windy day we experienced! A very useful book of recommendations was provided covering everything from when the baker arrives to the best beaches.

Location

The neighbourhood

There’s something of a wild west feel as you approach: past the Dehesa Montenmedio - with its natural parklands including golf course, Modern Art Centre and equestrian events - through the agricultural hamlet to the road’s end and the contrasting family-friendly finca with its fuss-free vibe, rich foliage and sea marsh views. It’s 4km to a good meal at the Venta Batato in Barca de Vejer, just short of the UNESCO hilltop Vejer de la Frontera, with all its tapas bars, restaurants and shops.

Local points of interest from Sean and Tanya MacRae

  • Some of the best undeveloped beaches on the Costa de la Luz are minutes away, from wide sandy family beaches to mud baths & secret coves. Explore the coast between the seaport of Tarifa to cultural Cadiz - Bolonia with Roman ruins & sand dune is a must.
  • Our 'Helping Hands' options include additional housekeeping, bilingual childminder & shopping service. Foodies can enjoy cookery courses, wine & sherry tasting and tapas tours - with bountiful local fresh produce in daily markets & restaurants!
  • Just 15km from North Africa, this is a unique corner of Spain. Savour a wealth of history & culture on your doorstep - visit one of the 265 regional ferias & carnivals, or explore the architecture of Jerez & Seville. Tangiers, Morocco is an easy day-trip.
  • Sample the wares of a bodega; escape to the hamman baths, relax with massage or yoga; treat yourself to a handwoven shawl, leather bags, basketware, Moroccan ironwork & bright pottery; brush up on your language skills or even try some authentic Flamenco.
  • Tucked into a protected Natural Park, guests can enjoy cycling & walking right from the front gates - or go horseriding along the beach. Montenmedio with its 18 hole golf course, renowned NMAC art centre & equestrian events is just a few minutes walk away.
  • With its milder Winter climate, shake off the chilly blues & enjoy the great outdoors! Try wind & kite surfing, or raptor/birdwatching with a local guide. Go whale & dolphin watching, or even take a nature safari through Donaña Park by 4x4 jeep or boat.

Introducing

Sean and Tanya MacRae

Owners Tanya and Sean and their family don’t live on the finca but they visit monthly to make sure everything’s running happily. Keen environmentalists, they manage their eight acres for nature to thrive and have created a large lake in the marshes to attract more wildlife all year round. They care that guests really enjoy themselves and have compiled an excellent manual of local information. Friendly caretaker Rob is on hand if needed.
