The
Experience

Twenty minutes from excellent Atlantic beaches and some wild stretches of coast, Vejer is a wonderful base for couples, families or a small group of friends intent on exploring western Andalucia. The house and its small cobbled courtyard, are in the village’s busy old quarter, all narrow streets, shops and plenty of tapas to choose from. Mirlo is on the ground floor, with table and chairs outside for outdoor dining, while Flamenco is on three levels, including two lovely terraces, one over the courtyard and one up on the roof.  Nimble guests will cope easily with the spiral staircase, little attic room for children and narrow entrance to the rooftop – it’s all great fun. Vibrant touches in ceramics and wall hangings reflect the region’s Moorish influences – and friendly Dutch owner Chantal has kept it simple, with basic kitchens but super walk-in showers. Within an hour or so’s drive are the Straits of Gibraltar, surfing beaches and cork oak groves in Los Alcornocales National Park, or fascinating cities like Jerez and Cadiz. You’ll need to park your car below the village but Chantal can pick up guests and luggage.

Local points of interest from Chantal Zwanenberg

  • Vejer is becoming the gourmet capital of Andalucia. You can sample everything here from traditional tapas to contemporary middle-eastern cuisine and all just a walk away. We recommend Corredera 55, El Califa, La Oficina, La Picolina.
  • The closest beach is El Palmar where surf shops and trendy bars line the long sandy stretch. Good for surfing, body boarding and people watching. The sunsets are spectacularly - bliss!
  • Another great beach is Bolonia. Surrounded by pine forests and sand dunes. Here you can also visit Baelo Claudia - Roman ruins featuring an impressive forum, temple and basilica. Busy in July and August, otherwise very tranquil.
  • Montenmedio Golf Club is a stunningly attractive course wrapped around a smart hacienda-style clubhouse. There's a modern art gallery too and in the spring, the Riding Centre hosts world class show jumping and dressage as part of the Sunshine Tour.
  • Vejer and surroundings also offer you plenty of possibilities for shopping, taking up some yoga classes or attend a surf course. We are happy to help you with this.
  • Visit Cádiz, the oldest city of Europe and have some tapas at the gourmet market. Take the boat to El Puerto de Santa Maria and discover the process of Sherry making and have a tasting! Or visit Jerez and the Real Escuela de arte ecuestre.
