Up between lemon and orange groves, through high walls to a cool-white space, eye-popping gardens – and utter, beautiful silence. You may never leave – though colourful Mojácar and secret beaches are 10 minutes one way, and you have the Sierra Cabrera mountains right on your doorstep. Low and sprawling, the cortijo has kept its traditional feel but been subtly updated. Bedrooms are elegantly airy with tiled floors, white walls, careful splashes of colour and dark Spanish furnishings. Wine-themed artwork – Yvonne was a wine importer – and contemporary lighting add a breezy touch. Sleek bathrooms have walk-in showers and spoiling goodies. Four rooms have patios around the bougainvillea-and-fountain-filled courtyard. The upstairs suite has a private terrace and spectacular views. Breakfast and home-cooked dinner are taken by the pool, the German hosts joining you for the latter. Passionate about the area, they’re eager to share tips. Or find a secret corner in the garden with its gazebo, fountain, palms and fruit trees. And simply unwind.
