An exotic oasis that welcoming Ralph and Sally have spent years creating – the guest book extols its virtues. It’s top-drawer ‘Santa Fe’ – all chunky beams and tree trunk shelves. Designer Sally loves chunky jewellery and Ralph’s mastery of all trades includes carpentry; his are the wardrobes, tables and lintels. Relax in the lushly tropical grounds, enjoy a pampering beauty treatment or a massage under one of the gazebos, then pad across to the pool with its tropical waterfall, overlooked by a buddha and enfolded by night-glittery trees. The honesty bar on the top terrace is a great place to meet other guests – and locals too, who pop in for a sundowner. The bedrooms are stocked with all you could want; three are in the main house and one, beside the pool with a private terrace, is delightfully Mexican in style. Nearby Burgau, with its bars and restaurants, has kept something of its old fishing village character. But you may not want to go out when there’s a fabulous barbecue kitchen in the grounds for guests – you even get your own cupboard and fridge!
