The
Experience

Not far from the main road, but very peaceful, is a villa for ten, a top-notch retreat. The British owners discovered the Algarve 30 years ago, found a perfect plot six miles from the sea and built the house of their dreams. From marble staircase to plush leather sofas to matching sunloungers and parasols, all is immaculate outside and in. And now it’s more tip-top than ever, thanks to the mosaic-tiled, low salt-purified heated pool. With bougainvillea behind you, trees to the side of you, gorgeous views ahead of you and beers chilling in the fridge, you could happily stay put all day. Resist! You are in a secret corner of the Algarve where the villages are timeless and the wild almond trees grow. Join the locals at the café/bar in São Brás de Alportel (a stroll away) or carry your picnic to the little oasis of Fonte Ferrea, where natural springs flow and cork trees flourish. Eat out in São Brás, Olhão, Tavira; buy ocean-fresh fish at Loulé’s market; set up the barbecue on the terrace. Beaches? The famous ones are a half hour drive but Fuseta’s is more charming – and closer.

Local points of interest from Justin Greaves

  • Quinta San Antonio is in the herb covered hillside between the coast and the mountains near to the market towns of Loule and Sao Bras. This is the secret heart of the Algarve with villages whose simple charms and whitewashed houses take you back in time.
  • The sleepy town of San Bras is on your doorstep with a daily fish and vegetable market which spills out into the adjoining streets on Saturday mornings. There are lots of pretty seaside villages along the coast between Faro and the Spanish Border.
  • Our low salt water pool is very special. No chlorine eyes or asthmatic wheezing. Rebuilt recently as an infinity pool the water is crystal clear free from any bugs as everything is skimmed off the top. Heating at an extra charge. Outdoor table tennis.
  • The Algarve beaches are renowned - our favourite is Fuseta which is a short drive away - the Isla Deserta is reached by ferry from Faro (10 Euros) and is a Robinson Crusoe experience! There's a great cafe on the island and lots of wildlife.
  • The local village of Alportel is only a 10 minute walk where there is a cafe (very popular with the locals). We have a riding stables a short walk away and there are two local gyms nearby.
  • For those in need of retail therapy - Forum Algarve is a dream come true. Brands like Zara, Mango & Pull and Bear are much better value than in the UK. The Portuguese pottery is beautiful and you can watch it being hand painted at Porches (great cafe).
