Convento Olhão

Olhao, Algarve
Bed & Breakfast

Traditional buildings converted with stylish minimalism into cool, white spaces. Shady courtyard, stunning roof terrace and refreshing pool

9 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

White, bright and luminous – the rooms here reflect the Algarve’s brilliant light. Drift from the wide roof terraces with views over Olhão’s rooftops and the beach-fringed lagoon, to the cool cloister with its ancient pillars, peaceful fountain, bougainvillea and blazing blue-and-white tiles. Architect and designer Filipe and Eleonore, who live next-door, have converted the former 19th-century girls’ hostel into a luxuriously simple sanctuary. Rooms are serene and gauzy with stripped wood floors, high white-beamed ceilings and minimal furnishings – perhaps an antique chest, baroque armchair or gilded mirror. Most open onto the courtyard or first-floor gallery; two have roof terraces, all have large marble bathrooms. Breakfast at a long convivial table on locally made jams, pastries and market-fresh fruit then slip out through the courtyard doors into the bustle of Olhão with its markets, Moorish streets and seafood restaurants. Explore the Ria Formosa lagoon, laze on the long sandy beaches, then return for a shady read in the courtyard, a dip in the rooftop pool or a sunset drink (honesty bar) from your white eyrie.

Cool, calm and serene. Expertly run by charming people .Beautiful town and gorgeous beaches.

TheConvento is absolutely delightful. It is an oasis of calm and the attention to detail is remarkable. The owners are charming; nothing is too much trouble. Really I can't fault it in any way!

Convento was a magical place to stay! I had a lovely sunny week in Olhao. The room was a sanctuary, the hosts were very attentive and the breakfasts were sumptuous. The place is a quiet, stylish heaven!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Guillaume Lefebure

  • The market: the local fish market, open every day except Sundays and Mondays, is the best in the Algarve. On Saturdays there is also a great farmers market on the seafront. All this is just 1 min from Convento.
  • The islands: it is really worth taking the ferry to visit the islands of Culatra/Farol and Armona with their typical villages and beautiful beaches. The ferries are a 5 min walk from Convento.
  • The Ria Formosa natural park: a bike trip to the Natural Park. There are also very interesting boat tours (3-4 hours) that take you around the Ria Formosa or in the Ocean to see dolphins.
  • Around Olhao: places worth visiting around Olhao include the old towns of Faro and Tavira, reachable by car or by train. A bit further, Lagos and Sagres in the west are interesting as well as Mertola in Alentejo at the border with the Algarve.
