The Experience

This tranquil, rural corner of north east Portugal is delightful. And so are Paulo and Teresa who make you feel really welcome with local good food; breakfasts of fresh bread, fruit, cheese and ham brought to your door (dinners can be organised too) and advice on everything from biking to blackberrying, horse riding to river beaches. They’ve young children of their own and the playground, games and fenced pool are for all to share. Their rambling old property, with roaming chickens and geese, lovely mountain and valley views, has six rustic, characterful and comfortable houses converted from former farm buildings (the most separate Cocenda is Wi-Fi free, for the digitally detoxing). Each has its own outdoor space and barbecue; natural materials in exposed stone walls and tiled floors; recycled and handmade wooden furniture; some mezzanine floors, some balconies; inviting beds – a couple made of wine barrels…Teresa’s father is an inspired carpenter. Kitchen sizes vary; some have hob cookers, some ovens too. Bathrooms are country simple and being modernised. Relaxing, fun and an hour from Porto and the Douro.

Reviews

We stayed in the house for 6 persons (Casa do Palheiro Grande). The accommodation is rustic but stunning and comfortable with stunning views. The whole set up is authentic and so relaxing. Ideal for families given swimming pool and animals (dog friendly by the way). Teresa and Paulo together with the extended family make you so welcome. Top tips - book directly through their website so breakfast is included and buy at least one dinner from the hosts. Location superb for visiting Guimaraes, Braga, Porto, River Duoro, Peneda- Geres National Park or just keep it very local as we did.

Quinta do Rapozinho was a lovely relaxing place to stay. They were very generous with their time to tell about the area or help us in any way. The food was good and our accomodation was very comfortable. The rural views also were great. Thank you so much.

Local points of interest from Paulo Moura

  • You're a 10-minute walk from a secret private place we like to present to our guests, where the little river has some dept and some little waterfalls we like to call "our natural spa". Just grab some pick-nick stuff and come with us.
  • Are your kids city children? We can help them connect with nature. We'll take them to feed the cows and the sheeps. We'll even let them dirty their clothes.
  • We can take you places nearby where you'll be able to walk within the river, run through watermills and learn about our rich fauna and flora.
  • Do you like to barbecue? Perfect! All our houses have a private barbecue and all the needed appliances. We're also in a Region with amazing autochthonous meat.
  • It's 09am. The silence of the countryside is mathematically interrupted by the buzz of Mr. Armando's truck. He brings fresh fish to our plates, everyday. You can even make some special requests on the day before. Long live Mr. Armando!
  • Here at the Vila of Cabeceiras de Basto, the fair is every Monday. You can experience some beautiful fruits, vegetables, typical & traditional products, etc. A must go.
