Sleeps 8

The small courtyard is full of shrubs and a wisteria snakes up the wall wrapping itself around the wrought iron balcony above. Step into the communal entrance hall, with its ceiling of rosebuds and leaves, and your apartment is on the first and attic floors. The feel throughout is white and modern; bright cushions, pink coffee table, books, colourful linen in sunny bedrooms and Richard’s striking photographs provide zest; white shutters and wooden floorboards add to the simple fresh vibe. Leading off the well-equipped kitchen are steps that take you down to a small patio with a wooden deck and barbecue: a shady and completely private spot, very pleasant on a hot day. A pretty doll’s house and a cupboard full of games will keep little ones happy, and there’s an assortment of films for all ages. Tons of things to see and do when you head out too: take a bus to the top of the mountain and visit the Romanticist Pena Palace, walk in parks and gardens, visit the Castle of the Moors, hop on a train to Lisbon, spend a day surfing at Guincho beach. Come with family or friends – an easy bolthole with plenty of space.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Dagmar Hedrich

  • The historical Sintra-Tram leaves a couple of minutes on foot from the house and takes you to the beautiful Praia das Maçãs.
  • Join the vintners at the local adegas and taste one of the rarest wines in the world! The village of Colares and adjacent parishes between Cabo da Roca and Magoito form Portugal's smallest and probably oldest demarcated wine region - since 1908.
  • Learn how to cook a typical Portuguese three-course meal, without leaving Casa José Ricardo! A professional chef comes to teach you all about ingredients and preparation during a private cooking class in our kitchen.
  • Garden lovers will enjoy the lushness of the whole area and the great variation of plants, brought by Portuguese royalty from all over the globe to the Sintra mountain, creating the most diverse and romantic parks and public gardens in all of Portugal.
  • The National Palace of Queluz is a few minutes by car, between Sintra and Lisbon. Its amazing garden houses the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art which performs high equestrian art shows a weekly basis.
  • Near us are a selection of amazing Atlantic beaches and fine golf courses. Plentiful hiking and cycling options start right from our doorstep. If you like to be outdoors and active during your holidays, Sintra has the right offers for all tastes and ages.
