The
Experience

There’s a wonderfully secluded feel to this tiny hamlet and its once simple church, high on a knoll with views all around over wooded hills and farmland. Having looped through vineyards and olive groves, a short stretch of strada bianca brings you to Valliano’s characterful cluster of stone buildings. Behind the owners’ house, in pristine gardens – lawned and flower-filled – the old church’s gothic arched doorway draws you in to a meticulous restoration, the stuff of style magazines. First to the wonderfully lofty, beamed living space: stone walls, terracotta floors, high arches dividing the dining, seating and (perfect) kitchen areas. A fab chandelier presides over dining, smart leather sofas face the wood-burner, a ‘floating’ iron staircase leads up. Bedrooms aren’t huge but are hugely appealing; uncluttered, country chic with designer lighting, beams, embroidered bed covers, rustic doors as bedheads. Stylish, honey-coloured bathrooms have the best, drenching showers. Sit out under the stone loggia and ponder: a walk to hill-top Anghiari, antique hunting in Arezzo, a refreshing dip in the pool…

Reviews

It’s all stunning - the house, the setting, the places to go (if you want to explore) and the peace and quiet (if that’s what you’re looking for). I was impressed with the standard of the property, the attention to detail and just how well-equipped it is. There are also very, very good restaurants within an easy drive - the sort that other people seem to find on their holidays and tell you about. I’d definitely go again.

Our second visit to Valiano, and as good as the first. The Church is a sympathetic heritage conversion with excellent facilities - the en-suites are particular luxurious. Extremely comfortable and spacious, with everything we needed. Valiano is within easy reach of good markets, if you enjoy cooking. Perhaps because of this, and despite my lengthy list of sights to see, we spent much of our time cooking and eating leisurely meals, and lounging in the plunge pool with good wine and good books - justified by early walks into the hills in the cool early mornings. Many many thanks again.

Local points of interest from Nicholas & Angela Robertson

  • There has been a church on this site for nearly one thousand years.
  • There are lovely walks behind the house up into the hills. It is possible to walk for hours without reaching a town or village. We have seen wild boar and deer on our walks
  • Perugia airport is about 40 minutes drive away (mostly motorway).
  • Montone is our nearest small town and is rated as one of the most beautiful in Italy. It has lovely restaurants for lunch and dinner, and amazing views. It is about 15 minutes away by car.
  • There is a swimming pool and a plunge pool at the property
  • Assisi, Gubbio, Citta di Castello, Perugia, and Umbertide are all within an 45 minutes drive.
