Warm, welcoming, enticing, a delight for the senses and with spell-binding views. The 14th-century look-out tower is the oldest part of this mellow stone podere; the house is for B&Bers, the separate apartment in the barn for self-caterers. To a backdrop of ancient beams and flagstone floors, intriguing arches, undulating walls and small deep-set windows is an elegant and inviting décor: a huge fireplace with a 16th-century fireback, mismatched sofas heaped with cushions, side tables with magazines to browse, a collection of hats, books galore (vintage and new), a standard lamp of antlers… and fabulous idiosyncratic antiques: your hosts are in the trade in Milan. Graziella and Maurizio – both utterly charming – produce exquisite but simple dishes if you book in advance, give you homemade cakes at breakfast and jams in season, and big beautiful bedrooms, one with a stand-alone bath. For shops, bars and restaurants there’s ancient Montone, a mile up the hill. Classical music wafts in summer to pergolas entwined with wisteria and vines; seats are of wicker or wrought-iron. Irresistible, enchanting.

Excellent - what a beautiful place and fantastic hosts -

Absolutely perfect: the position of the house with lovely views; first-rate room; lovely breakfasts and superb suppers; good pool....but most of all the genuine welcome and unforced service from the Munari family. They are marvellous. We have been going to Italy for over 30 years and think Podere Cardaneto is the best B&B we have ever stayed in. We stayed 5 nights and absolutely loved it. One small comment: the Sawday website says credit cards are AREN'T, so that was a minor shock as we approached departure!

We had been to Montone before, but not to Cardoneto. This place is everything you want in Italy - relaxed, welcoming, peaceful..the list goes on. Maurizio and Graziela are lovely hosts, really going out of their way to be helpful. Breakfast on the vine-covered terrace is a treat and it was nice to meet other - Italian, French and Belgian - guests. The gardens and pool area are perfect for relaxing and the whole house is full of antiques and interesting 'stuff'! We go to Italy most years and this was one of the nicest places we've stayed at.

A tranquil retreat in the beautiful Umbrian countryside. Maurizio and his family were hugely welcoming and helpful. They provided delicious food including fresh produce picked from the garden and their own olive oil, vinegar, jams. The pool is delightful, surrounded by hammocks and loungers shaded by olive trees. Montone is a charming village with several decent restaurants. A perfect place to relax. Would recommend hiring a car for convenience - even if you don't intend to drive very far.

Fabulous, authentic farmhouse full of wonderful antiques. Maurizio and his family made us very welcome and created some fantastic meals using fresh local produce. We had the most spectacular views from our bedroom window. Montone is delightful, we visited every day and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere with mainly locals.

My daughter and I are about to leave Podere Cardeneto after four nights here. We wish it were longer. The owners could not have been more helpful, charming and welcoming The house is a winning combination of style, comfort and a genuine home. It has tranquility and presense. Full of books, art, interest and fun (and Billie Holliday!) The food was superb - local ingredients cooked with flair and apparent simplicity -completely delicious. We could not have asked for more and the whole stay was wonderful. We will be back and would recommend anyone to come. Location fantastic.
