The old borgo buildings (some 16th century) are now self-contained apartments; come for deep delicious comfort on a working, self-sufficient estate. Wander down the terraced orchards to a huge pick-your-own vegetable garden overlooking a steam bath and sleek pool – and tables and chairs under a vine canopy, an idyllic setting for lunch. Beyond are olive groves, vineyards and pastures – space galore to explore. Lavender-scented bedrooms are touched with elegant details: jade-coloured vases arranged just so, divine hand-detailed linen, old doors mounted as headboards, antique frames holding romantic paintings. Neutral coloured throws complement beamed ceilings, terracotta floors and sturdy wooden pieces, bookshelves hold handsome tomes, framed copies of old letters and antique architectural plans dot walls. High-ceilinged sitting rooms and a cavernous dining room hewn from the hillside provide heart-warming living space; knock-out views across the valley mean you’ll keep the curtains open. Visit the wonderful little villages of the Valnerina, fall in love with this magical place.

We had a fabulous 10 days in winter (more like Autumn) with our 2 children in Casa del Cipresso which is all on one level. The property is beautiful and very well located to tour Umbria. The house has been sensitively restored, so is full of character, but very comfortable and beautifully decorated. We loved the homemade zucchini lasagne and bottle of local wine that greeted our arrival. We highly recommend the cooking lesson by Maria - kids enjoyed making orecchiette pasta, and our dinner was delicious. We would definitely stay again
