Up the winding road, into the wooded hills, to find, at the end of the track, a quirky and enchanting haven. Imagine an exuberant garden, a glassy pool, and, in warm mellow stone, a handsome house reached by an outdoor stair and a one-up, one-down cottage. Bought as a ruin in 1976, Il Giardino comes with 12 hectares. You won’t meet the owners – delightful, aesthetic, well-travelled – but their passions and personality pervade the place. The main sitting room, warmly inviting with low beams, yellow walls and wonky floors, is brimful of books, gay fabrics and treasures from travels, and a great rustic fireplace for winter. Lofty kitchen shelves heave with books and crockery, as an antique Alsace stove glows in one corner. Visit the lovely towns of Tuscany and Umbria (you’re on the border of both). Return to pretty, cosy, colourful bedrooms, with baths and hand-held showers. Outside is an oasis bursting with plants, trees and secret paths through bushes and hedges to hammocks and patios, a glassy pool that reflects the sky, an orchard where Indian mirrors swing in the breeze. All ages will be enchanted.

This lovingly restored 19th century farmhouse with its beautiful garden and idyllic setting is a garden-lover’s paradise, the perfect place for a restorative holiday. We visited in the autumn, and will certainly go again in spring or summer. The location is quite remote so you need a car to explore the many lovely towns in the area, also famous for its delicious food. The house is furnished with everything that you might need, including lots of helpful information about local attractions and things to do. But best of all is the tranquil beauty of the garden itself.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Vanna Wittenburg

  • Our house was a working farmhouse until the 1960s .It was built in the 1870s, we bought it in 76 and restored it without changing its original structure. We kept the layout of the surrounding fields transforming them into different ' garden rooms'.
  • We are passionate gardeners: we have a great variety of plants, hundreds of beautiful terracotta pots and a huge collection of botanical books. every garden room has furniture, so you will be able to enjoy different parts of the garden day and night.
  • For art lovers there are many medieval and Renaissance towns with splendid museums to visit nearby: Cortona, , Bevagna, Assisi Giotto), Arezzo (Piero della Francesca), Spello (Pinturicchio). Don't miss the Madonna del Calcinaio near Cortona, splendid!
  • Music lovers will enjoy the Perugia Jazz festival, Festival delle Nazioni in Citta' di Castello, Terre Senesi Festival in Iris Origo's beautiful gardens at La Foce, Opera in Montepulciano.
  • Food lovers will enjoy all the 'sagre' (village fetes) with a food theme: mushrooms, truffles... Favorite place for aperitivo: Locanda dell'Amorosa in Sinalunga, most romantic. Good restaurants in the lovely villages of Lucignano and Montone.
  • After all these activities you will deserve a swim in our beautiful swimming pool with the swallows skimming the water in the evening with a glass of Cortona Syrah and some finocchiona and Tuscan bread to go with it.
