The
Experience

A divine bolthole for two with magical views over a bounteous garden, hardy olive groves and undulating Siena countryside. Tucked away in a small borgo, a striking low-slung white cottage (originally a shepherd’s hideaway) is bookended by two terraces draped with vine-laden pergolas – perfect spots for morning coffee or lazy suppers when the fireflies put on a mesmerising show. You step straight into an open-plan living/dining room, a calm and inviting space with white walls, comfy armchairs in front of an open fire and a simple dining table near French windows. Off here is a sleek kitchen with all the mod cons any budding Nigella could wish for. And, on the same floor, an elegant bedroom – note the local stone mosaic headboard and more French doors opening to the fragrant garden; next to here is a smart shower room. Pick fruit from the abundant trees – cherry, pomegranate, apricot, peach – each morning as you plan your day: you’re within easy striking distance of good eateries, an array of fabulous spas, plenty of fascinating Etruscan sites and all sorts of walking routes.

When traveling we generally do our best to "live like a local"... We try to get way from touristy places and attractions. Italy is one of the most visited countries on the planet, so if you want your space, you have to work for it (a little). We planed our trip to Italy around spending some time away from the crowds and boy is the southern part of Tuscany the answer!! But that doesn't mean you have to rough it, That's where La Ginestra comes in: An amazing little oasis located in the middle of one of the most spectacular places on earth.

My husband and I stayed at La Ginestra for five days during our honeymoon. We had been searching for something in Tuscany that would be suitable and private for two people. La Ginestra is located in the most beautiful spot, perfect for us two. The view was incredible, we spent many mornings and evenings sitting outside listening to the nature around us and taking in the views. La Ginestra was also a great home base for many day trips (We visited Siena, Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza and more!). Richard provides great resources for local restaurants

We had the most amazing 7 nights in La Ginestra. It was everything we hoped for and more! Sitting outside looking at the beautiful view, we felt like we had the whole of Tuscany to ourselves as the cottage is so private. You would never know the local shops were literally five minutes walk away! Definitely the best of both worlds. Richard's file full of information on things to do, where to eat etc was most useful. Our favourite piece of information was on the man who comes to the village twice a week with a truck full of fresh local produce.

This place is absolutely outstanding and we give our warmest recommendations. Richard is the perfect host and everything is as promised.

Since this was our second trip, Maurizio gave us the “short briefing and welcome” which was just perfect as we remembered how helpful he was on our first stay and we came right from Rome airport! For tired American travelers, we thoroughly appreciated the comfortable bed, well-appointed kitchen, great shower and romantic fireplace and outdoor tub (a great addition!). Thanks for all the details to keep Americans happy in Italy while feeling like locals! Much appreciated Richard! Love the non-tourist but central location and our ability to walk and wander

This house is as wonderful as the other reviewers indicate. The house is beautiful with everything you could need. It's also very thoughtfully decorated. We appreciated the attention to detail and little touches that make it feel unique. The views are simply breathtaking. The area where it is located is quite perfect--nearby markets, stores, and restaurants but when you are at the house you feel tucked away in the countryside. We loved every minute of our time at La Ginestra and hope to return someday.

We booked the apartment very spontaneously for a short trip. The contact from the homeowner was direct and very friendly and accommodating. The house is perfect for a quiet holiday for two. Everything is there, what one needs for the everyday life. The view from the terrace is breathtaking !! The property is very quiet, but a small supermarket with the main food is within walking distance in less than 5 minutes. We made beautiful trips by car from there. We are happy to come back, next time we have hopefully longer vacation!

We were so grateful for our time at La Ginestra. It was beautiful, clean, modern, and quaint all at the same time. We loved the quiet, peace, and incredibly beautiful surroundings. We would absolutely go back if we're able to make a trip to Tuscany in the future!

We loved La Ginestra. Maurizio was super accommodating and welcoming. We ate at Daniela's restaurant the first night- Pici dish to die for. The next morning was gorgeous. It had rained previously and when the sun was out it drenched the bedroom and we opened the doors to enjoy the air. Everything was crisp and green and the peaceful, sweeping view is engraved in my memory! The house was accessible to me. My boyfriend easily helped me in my manual wheelchair up the step and threshold and from there I fit easily through the doorways and I used a garden chair in the shower.

Local points of interest from Richard Keir

  • San Casciano dei Bagni is one of the areas most beautiful hill towns. It is an elegant village, it's a mecca for artists and writers who flock to its quiet environs. Known as one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia", one of the loveliest villages in Italy.
  • Nearby flow some 40 thermal springs fueled by Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano and southern Tuscany¹s highest mountain. The area is famous for its lovely therapeutic spas and the villages built around them.
  • Casciano dei Bagni¹s Fonte Verde is rated one of the top spas in Europe. The entire area is a treasure trove of hill towns, art, and history. Wine and food range from the simple to sublime. Walking trails abound.
  • The towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano have become famous because of their outstanding red wines: Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile de Montepulciano respectively. So wine tasting is a fun way to spend an afternoon there.
  • There are excellent roads for biking and trails for horseback riding. There is a wonderful public swimming pool in Sarteano, 20 minutes away.
  • Year round, the nearby villages hold festivals that include music, food, and medieval pageantry. (Celle sul Rigo holds an annual Sagra dei Pici, celebrating the local hand made pasta).
