The Experience

It’s exciting to climb up to a remote village, then snake down through woods on a surprisingly well-paved road. This sturdy three-storey farmhouse has been transformed into a modern retreat with enchanting views and Donatella, a local with perfect English, will be on hand to welcome you.

The house is superbly equipped for groups, from the kitchen with double fridges to an outside pizza oven and barbecue. Settle by the fireplace with books, games or DVDs in colder weather, or gather by the heated pool in summer; pick cherries and plums in season and go barefoot on the grass.

You can walk to the local restaurant in Vellano, which has no menu, just what’s fresh that day. There are scenic trails – ask your hosts about guided walks – and ten medieval villages within a 15-mile radius, all complete with castle or church tower. The beach and the city of Lucca are less than an hour away.

Reviews

I was torn between wanting to just sink into the view or explore it. The Villa is perfectly outfitted for preparing group meals; the big double fridges are such a plus as is the wood burning pizza oven. The rooms are airy and bright and all the spaces indoors and out are beautifully kept. It's really easy to walk to Vellano to get delicious focaccia at baker's or to dine at the only (and very good) restaurant. Having a chance to mingle with friendly locals at the summer food festivals is fun. A car is necessary to best appreciate the area which is blissfully distanced from mass tourism.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive from the village of Vellano, which has a restaurant and a bakery. Pietrabuona is a ten-minute drive and has a shop, and Pescia (6km) has supermarkets and a train station for jaunts into Pisa or Florence. There are several destinations within an hour’s drive such as the beach, the mountain resort of Abetone and the city of Lucca.

Local points of interest from The Croppers

  • Vellano is one of the 10 ancient 'castelli', medieval hill top towns in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The views from the house are simply wonderful across the valley.
  • Each castelli hamlet has an annual 'Sagra' - a celebration of the local produce-Vellano's is in August to celebrate meat and October the chestnut. Others are for Wild Boar, the famous Serano beans. All are welcome to this feast with wine and dancing.
  • Local great restaurants are Locando Zacco 10 mins up the mountain and Sandrinos, 5 mins down the hill. Amanda in PietraBuona will prepare and serve meals for you too. We also love Osteria del Parco next to the beach, Marina dei Vecchiano, for seafood pasta
  • Pescia, the nearest town is a charming 'real' working Tuscan town, with one of the oldest hospitals formed by the monks, in Tuscany. There is a great market every Saturday-but get up early. Join the spectacular medieval Palio in the first weekend Sept.
  • Lucca, the incredible Unesco listed walled town is an architectural gem. A 40 min drive away down the old Roman road. Enjoy the walls by hiring a bike at the numerous outlets and cycle the easy 4km flat trail among shady trees. A City not to be missed.
  • Return to the house to enjoy home made pizza, a glass of local Montecarlo wine, take a dip in the pool and experience a stunning sunset from the sun soaked terrace. Beat the kids on the full size table tennis and RELAX.
