The
Experience

The farmhouse sits on an estate of oak and cypress-studded fields of wheat; olive groves and vineyards sweep down to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Loll on poolside loungers, soak up the peace. It’s wonderfully laid-back, yet classy and romantic at the same time. As for the interiors, they are quirky and design-mag cool. A huge communal Maremma table beneath antique oil-lamps in a stunningly elegant dining room forms the focus of meals enriched by stylish young Alessandro; the chef bakes fresh cakes for breakfast each day. Fabulous furniture from Victorian voyager Augusta Belloc (daughter of Hilaire) – bought blind as a ‘job lot’ – catch the eye throughout: big gold mirrors and pretty gilded sconces; cherrywood pieces, intricate swans carved into their legs; a huge mahogany four-poster; an ornate bathroom mirror above an ancient marble basin; and, in the red and white-tiled sitting room, beautiful antique armchairs in deep rich blue and gold. Try to peel yourself away: medieval towns, beaches and the thermal baths at Saturnia are close. A special, unusual and remote place – made magical by Alessandro.
