The Experience

A fallen column lying deep in the grass, a quiet lake…so peaceful it’s hard to believe what a history this settlement has had since it was first recorded in 1075. It is placed in a huge natural amphitheatre, ringed by hills and medieval fortresses, and has its own magic spring. Once you’ve driven through the big rusty gates and down the tree-lined drive, you’ll be greeted by your hosts (and a glass of their own wine) in an 11th-century church – part of their private quarters, and a museum where guests will be invited for a tour during their stay.

It’s the most lovely, airy space, with battered columns, soaring arches and elegant furniture – a subtle study in cream, gold and brown. The studios and apartments each have their own patio, terrace or balcony and are simply furnished with family antiques and fine old paintings. Enchanting windows look over the grounds, the massive walls are rough stone or plaster, the ceilings beamed or vaulted.
You’re in the wilder part of Tuscany which borders the sea.

Reviews

The Pieve has been a longtime Sawday's favourite and son Emiliano has taken over the reigns of the multi-generational family property with passion. His informality as a host puts guests at ease from the start. An ideal peaceful countryside base not far from the sea from which to explore some incredible treasures in this more wild side of Tuscany - the feeling of being the first to discover it!

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

I am still dreaming, talking and thinking about this oasis of beauty in the Tuscan landscape and can't wait to go back. From the moment we were greeted by Emiliano and tasted the first drop of cool organic wine, to stepping into our exquisite room. The stone ceiling and floor kept you cool and there was no TV in sight. bliss. The four poster bed provided the best nights sleep in a long time, and the eye was constantly drawn to paintings and gorgeous antiques. What a very special experience. Thankyou.

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest town is 5kms and the views extend all the way to the sea and the outline of Giglio Island, so the feel is very rural. There are marked walking trails through the woods and vineyards. Trattoria da Nada (6kms) serves gorgeous food - try the classic tortelli. Visit medieval castles, ancient villages, Bolgheri wine country and cathedrals where Gregorian chant is still heard.

Local points of interest from Emiliano & Chiara

  • Complimentary wine at welcome and in room.
  • Permanent art gallery in the former millenary church room, where guests are welcome
  • Personally welcome and assisted by owners during all the stay, as owners are resident in the hamlet,a s good neighbours
  • Organic farm that produces an excellent extra virgin olive oil: free tasting for guests
  • Secluded in a panoramic hill property, very quiet and romantic, no other buildings around for miles!
  • Tactical position to explore all Southern Tuscany, from Siena to the coast, from Massa Marittima to Montalcino, from San Galgano to Pitigliano

Introducing

Emiliano & Chiara

Emiliano, his wife Chiara and their three girls are the host family although during the term time, the girls and Chiara return to Florence. Emiliano has taken over the reins from his parents (the estate has been in the family since 1873) and looks after guests as well as the olive oil and wine production of the large estate.
