Il Ritiro

Fiesole, Florence
Bed & Breakfast

Set above the tumult of Florence, this elegantly friendly B&B has personality, many treasures, a plunge pool, lovely hosts.

3 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 4

On the cool hillside of ancient Fiesole, step into a place of peaceful style, an elegantly relaxed and historic home where citrus trees bloom and your friendly, cultured hosts will feed your body and mind delightfully each morning. They make their own olive oil, grow fruit and vegetables, keep chickens – all organic – and are a deeply caring couple. In a house filled with fine works of period and contemporary art, oriental rugs strew the floors, there is personality and flair – Amanda has a lovely way with fabrics – at every turn. Bedrooms, one up one down, one with a terrace, are appealing and colourful, beds are superb, bathrooms are fun. After a day among the steaming treasures of Florence, you will do as the Strozzi family did 400 years ago: return to the cooling breezes and airy loggia of this lovely house and terraced garden. The plunge pool with its timber deck overlooking the Duomo is irresistible, there are several sitting areas for quiet moments and the whole place is supremely unsmart and charming. Fabrizio can even take you on your own tailor-made Tuscany tour. B&B doesn’t get better than this.

Time elongates: sun shines through shutters, birds sing. Cool flagstones underfoot, comfy sofas from which to watch the shadows move under the lemon trees. Perhaps a coffee, perhaps a prosecco? Did we need for anything? Warm colours, warm welcome, candles flicker on the evening table. A small Jack Russell would like to keep you company. It would have been easy to go somewhere else....a walk down to the village for dinner, perhaps a slide ride in the Palazzo Strozzi? But at the beginning and the end of the day be here, grounded in the Tuscan earth. Peace rules.

Over all the years of visiting beautiful Sawday places we've never before felt moved to write a review - but Il Ritiro is different. Amanda and Fabrizio made us feel at home in their elegant home as if we were family. We stayed a week, walking and visiting Fiesole and Florence and always came back to a welcome, lively conversation and laughter. Perceptive, kind and engaging they took us to places we wouldn't have perhaps visited and we spent happy hours in their beautiful garden and house. For us this was a very special holiday.

we were welcomed with open arms at Il Ritiro by Amanda and Fabrizio. Amanda drove us in to Florence and was extremely informative and helpful which enhanced our experience. On our return from a long day of sightseeing They were both there again to pick us up and offered us wine to revive us. We loved our stay and would definitely recommend it.

Il Retiro was perfect! A beautiful quiet place with lovely comfortable rooms and places to sit and relax, looking at the views of Florence. The breakfasts in the loggia were delicious. Amanda and Fabrizio were so welcoming and drove us everywhere-inand out of the city, to restaurants, to see stunning views and then plied us with drinks in the evening. It was just the place to relax in after sightseeing in Florence and we thoroughly recommend it.

We spent a wonderful few days at Amanda and Fabrizio's beautiful property overlooking Florence, and it was the best of a number of Sawday's places we stayed at in northern Italy. They were more than the perfect hosts going out of their way to provide advice on restaurants, tours, things to see/do etc, and doing so in such a welcoming way that we immediately felt we were staying with friends rather than being paying guests. The house and garden are wonderful and a real oasis of calm, and the breakfasts were perfect. We can't recommend staying here highly enough and hope to return.

We arrived in soaring temperatures in mid-summer with two children in tow and were greeted by Amanda, the most welcoming and happy host we have had the pleasure of meeting. This was just the start of two wonderful days at Il Ritiro. Our family room was delightful with views to the Duermo. After being shown to our rooms we were taken to the pool to cool down and were served with food and drinks. Our hosts even took us into the City of Florence and gave us a brief tour from the famous balcony. Amanda is keen to share her historical knowledge of Florence and and her enthusiasm radiates. Amazing !

From the minute, we walked through the door of Il Ritiro, we felt instantly at home, like we were visiting old friends. The view from our room was breath-taking, allowing you to see the city of Florence and the Duomo. Fabrizio’s chianti tour was the best tour of our holiday! What I loved is that at the end of the day we all sat down together sharing a bottle of wine and talking about what we had seen that day. It truly was a fantastic place to stay and would recommend to anyone who is thinking of visiting Florence. Not only was the place amazing but Amanda and Fabrizio are wonderful people!

What an amazing place. Beautifully furnished, steeped in history, fantastic views over Florence. Most importantly Amanda and Fabrizio really went above and beyond to make it feel like home from home. If only home was as stylish! Could not have asked for more. Huge thanks to our hosts - we will be back.

Just the most magical place imaginable, Wonderful views from a 14th c Villa with extensive gardens and superb views,Amanda, true star of a host and owner who provided superb breakfast & evening drinks and had a wonderful knowledge of all to see both in Fierenze and many historic gardens and Villas one could visit in the area. All in all the perfect stay. Sawday's you sure know how to pick good venues and this is one of the best ever.

The 'blurb' suggests somewhere very special, the 'reality' totally confirms this - we loved it. Amanda and Fabrizio have a beautiful home overlooking Florence, a wonderful easily-reached escape from the heat that builds in the city thru the course of the day. The whole house exudes beauty and charm, with both traditional and modern contributing to the overall effect. Amanda herself is informed, informative & great company, a fount of knowledge whom we found incredibly helpful, going out of her way (literally) to be of help. Thinking of going? Do it! Thank you so much, Amanda & Fabrizio.

We had a wonderful stay with Amanda and Fabrizio - they were the perfect hosts. The house was even more impressive than what the photos showed. We stayed for 1 week in April and as the house is so close to Florence we spent half of our time exploring this beautiful city. The rest of our time was spent walking in the gorgeous countryside that surrounds the house and Fiesole. Amanda even drove us to the start of a walk a few miles away so we could walk part of the Via Degli Dei (The Way of the Gods) long distance walking route. I would highly recommend this property and hope to return again.

Such a fabulous place to stay! We had 2 nights at Il Ritiro - in our delightful room - with a view of Florence. Amanda & Fabrizio welcomed us into their home - an oasis of calm & tranquillity on the hill overlooking Florence. Even before we arrived, Amanda was sharing her tips on restaurants in Tuscany and places to see. She showed us around Florence and we saw this stunning city through the eyes of a local. We made friends with her two very friendly dogs as we relaxed on the terrace after a day of sightseeing, cocooned from the buzz of the outside world.

What a spectacular place. We stayed 4 nights with 2 of our kids and the two rooms we had were marvelous. Amanda and Fabricios are lovely hosts and supported us in booking museums and with plenty of great recommendations. After a hectic day in Florence we enjoyed this quite and peaceful place to recharge the batteries. No doubt we will come back and can just highly recommend Il Ritiro.

I have stayed at many Sawday's B&B's over the last few years but I can honestly say that this is by far the nicest I have been too. The host was wonderful, the breakfast and accommodation were delightful and the view was stunning! It felt like a home from home.

Stephen, Oxfordshire

If every host were as wonderful as Amanda and Fabrizio, no-one would ever go home again. Certainly I didn't want to leave, even to return home to France. I would happily have stayed forever, eating lovely food, drinking prosecco and thinking about picking the lemons! If you are visiting Florence, look no further for a place to rest your head, you have found it.

Louise, Pontivy

A truly special place. A wonderfully atmospheric and historic house with gorgeous rooms and a timeless view over Florence. A quick bus trip from the city centre sights, with a plunge pool to cool off in, it's a place of real beauty and calm (with the occasional interjection from 2 very friendly dogs and a couple of charming donkeys in the garden). Amanda and Fabrizio couldn't have made us feel more welcome. They are incredibly generous, thoughtful hosts - and great company. Highly recommended.

In July I visited Florenz and spent two nights in this stunning and beautiful B&B Il Retiro with Amanda and Fabrizio. It is how you would picture your Italian holiday, a warm welcome and great sightseeing tips from Amanda. The palazzo, the garden and my room are beautiful and the view over Florenz are breathtaking. I would highly recommend Il Retiro, who would like to rest and relax after a busy day of sightseeing.

We spent a memorable couple of days at Il Ritiro with Amanda and Fabrizio. The house is beautiful, the location stunning -- picture perfect views of Florence below from the rooms, from the garden, from the lovely pool -- and the company was wonderful and fun, soon after we'd arrived it felt like we were visiting old friends. This is a great base to explore the Tuscan hills and, of course, Florence which is moments away by car or bus. Amanda and Fabrizio are very knowledgable about the area and happy to help arrange trips and museum visits, in-house massages etc. Highly recommended.

We were at Il Ritiro for 7 nights, and loved it. Full of charm, character and attention to detail, it’s a perfect location for exploring Florence and Tuscany. The bedrooms are lovely and the breakfasts are delicious and generous. Amanda and Fabrizio are superb hosts, very welcoming, always caring and yet professional, who really made us feel comfortable and special, and were very helpful throughout our stay. Everything was really perfect. We can highly recommend this B&B for a short or longer stay in this beautiful landscape and tranquil surroundings. We will surely come back.
