You’re more or less midway between Pisa, Florence and Siena – and your delightful hostess knows the area inside out. Up from Certaldo Basso, through vines and olives along a private road, is this pretty cluster of farm buildings on a gentle rise. In the big stone farmhouse owned by the Mocarini sisters are these apartments charmingly furnished by Patrizia – one up (Pettirosso), the other down (Usignolo). First-floor Pettirosso is ideal for a family – a big floral sofa and a Tuscan fireplace, ceiling beams and touches of exposed stone, and a charming wicker furnished balcony-terrace (you also get your own seating area in the olive tree grounds). Ground-floor Usignolo, a retreat for two, has a big double bedroom and a lofty dining room/ kitchen with a fabulous open fireplace… and, through a wide arch, a sitting room with a divan bed (fine for a child) and a loggia for sun and shade. Certaldo Basso, a five-minute drive down the hill, is great for restaurants and bars, and the funicular to lovely hilltop Certaldo Alto. As for the views, they stretch across the valley to the towers of San Gimignano, beautifully floodlit at night.
