Goldene Rose Hotel

Senales, Bolzano / Bozen

Ski to your heart’s content, walk the Via Monochorum, bike the Val Venosta, eat fine fresh regional food, take a nightcap by the wood-burner

21 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

A great alpine escape. The Certosa village setting, the peace, the people, the food are balm to the soul. Carthusian monks quieted theirs up here in the Val Senales between the 14th and 18th centuries; now you can visit the monastery and sample wines in the cellars opposite the hotel. Stefania and Paul are the latest Grüners to care for its guests, along with their attentive team. They bring warmth and flair – and their own cosmetics line for use in the smart beauty salon and wellness centre. Gardens are pretty, private and productive, for soft fruit, herbs and vegetables. Two chefs use the freshest of everything for fine Tyrolean dinners and buffet breakfasts to eat in the stylish, woody dining room or out on the terrace. 20 serene, contemporary rooms, most with terrace or balcony, one its own sauna, are topped with a rooftop suite with the most stunning views. Out of the skiing season, walking and biking are a joy and Paul is always happy to advise and accompany. Plan a wedding here; the chapel’s simply lovely. And do include time at the Grüner’s equally memorable Refuge Bella Vista at almost 3000m.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Stefania & Paul Grüner

  • HIKE: In 1991, two hikers came upon a body along a mountain ridge bordering our valley. It turned out to be Europe’s oldest known natural mummy. Ötzi has since become an international sensation. HIKERS can visit the site where the Iceman was discovered.
  • ARCHEOPARK: Children and adults alike will enjoy being immersed in the Copper Age world in which Ötzi lived: bake bread, shoot arrows, ignite a fire, forge copper and make jewellery just like Ötzi would have done. In Bolzano, you can visit Ötzi himself.
  • MERANO: this has been a health resort for the Austrian nobility for centuries. Today’s TERME spa boasts more than 25 indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna complex, all immersed within a verdant 5,000-m2 park.
  • THE GARDENS OF TRAUTTMANSDORFF CASTLE: Named the International Garden of the Year in 2013, Trauttmansdorff is South Tyrol’s top attraction. Its many events range from cocktail hours to Sunday brunches to world music concerts.
  • DOLOMITES: The UNESCO World Heritage citing calls them “some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere.” The Dolomites are unique because they were born from the sea in a colossal geological event that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago.
  • FURTHER AFIELD: Enjoy day trips to popular Italian and Austrian destinations: sail on Lake Garda, take in an opera at the Roman arena in Verona, or enjoy a wine tasting while cycling along the South Tyrolean Wine Road.
