The
Experience

Escape the coast, head for the hills, keep an eye out for the Greek temple of Segesta. Then you reach a pot-holed road that buckles through vineyards, citrus groves and rough fields where sheep graze with their ringing bells; this is an ancient landscape. Caterina’s sprawling stone farmhouse, its land and its rose-strewn garden have been in the family for generations. Cultured, gentle, a lovely hostess, she welcomes you in and lives up the hill. The farmhouse’s front is inset with a huge panel of glass embracing the arch of a former barn, behind which red streamlined sofas sit beneath high beams, art old and new hangs on plain white walls and cabinets hold small sculptures and pottery: it’s stunning. A modern kitchen stands where oil was once pressed and there’s a second kitchen above, with a tiny terrace and the loveliest views. Some beds have a painted headboard, all have simple white bed covers, bathrooms are minimalist and spotless. Splash in the beautiful salt water pool, bask under the gazebo, explore the beaches of old Castellammare, the swimming coves of Scopello, the nature reserves of Zingaro.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Caterina Mollica

  • San Giovanni Vecchio is surrounded by 4 hectares of citrus and figs trees, pomegranates, persimmons, prickly pears and beautiful flowering shrubs. Olive and almond trees grow on the gypsum rocks that dramatically breaks up the gentler hillside.
  • A car is necessary! We are 3 km from the friendly town of Calatafimi, in the heart of Western Sicily, and strategically located near several centres of cultural and natural interest.
  • The Greek temples of Segesta and Selinunte, Palermo, Trapani, the medieval town of Erice, the remains of Phoenician Mozia, the dancing Satyr in Mazara del Vallo, Marsala and the famous Arab-Norman mosaics of Monreale are all within a 1 hour drive.
  • Calatafimi is very good for stocking up on local delicacies and offers a choice of butchers, bakers, green grocers and pasticcerie as well as small supermarkets. The area produces excellent wines and cheeses.
  • If you are interested in cooking, we run typical Sicilian cookery courses on request using old family recipes and only local, seasonal produce. You can also sample the wines made by our local winery, Dispensa San Pietro, using Sicilian grape varieties.
  • To prepare yourselves for your visit, you might enjoy reading "Calatafimi: behind the Stone Walls of a Sicilian Town", written by Angus Campbell, a local Englishman and historian who loved the area and its people.
