Hotel style formality and restrained luxury are the hallmarks of this adobe-style retreat. From the main road head up through rolling vineyards to the gated entrance and into a heady world of fine food and wine, gardens of herbs and lavender, and a promise of pampering. All rooms have distant sea views and their own garden terrace – there’s also access to a private beach, but it’s set back from the sea and you’re not encouraged to take your lounger there – shame! Still the interiors are beautiful: earthy hues, terracotta floors, lovely fabrics and rugs; opulent bathrooms are wrapped in local marble and come with olive-oil based toiletries. Plentiful breakfasts are served buffet-style from one long table, a feast of breads, cereals, fruit, cheese and ham. Spend active days walking or attending a class (wine-tasting and cookery are both available), or lazy days in the shade with a book. Visit salt mines and historic towns, return for evening drinks in the lounge with paintings from the family collection. Dine in or out on local specialities as the sun dips below the horizon: it’s under five miles to the nearest town.
