The Experience

Salento is the heel of Italy: you can walk the rugged cliffs of the Salentine peninsula, or laze on the beaches of Tricase and Castro Marina. Lucugnano is a characteristic small town of Salento. A local lady welcomes you to your 17th-century Palazzotto, holiday home of a family from Rome. It’s a wise old house, solid and cool, and built, according to local tradition, around a courtyard garden. Long stone seats are softened with cushions; a pomegranate tree proffers lunchtime shade; doors and tall windows frame cloudless blue skies. The house was once home to two families, hence the intriguing layout and the many steps and levels. A stone stair leads to bedrooms on the first floor (two of which are connected by a door); above is a roof terrace with views to Tricase and Specchia. As for the décor, it is sophisticated but friendly. White walls and stone floors are uncluttered, shutters are pale painted, a round antique table seats ten. Eat and drink your way through the produce of the region, stroll the narrow streets of coastal Otranto, marvel at Lecce, the capital of ‘Barocco’.

Reviews

A beautifully restored and thoughtfully decorated house in the centre of a lovely small town within easy reach of the coast (Adriatic and Ionian). The rooms were spacious and cool with lovely furnishings throughout. The large and very well equipped kitchen made it a pleasure to cook the occasional home cooked meals (meatballs supplied by the local butcher!). Plenty of shady areas to sit outside and a wonderful view from the roof terrace to watch the sun set whilst enjoying a glass or two of the excellent local wines. Our host Isabella was very helpful and kept in touch throughout our stay.

Il Palazotto is the epitome of stunning Puglian architecture. The house is stylishly conceived & beautifully furnished, elegant yet comfortable (with every utensil & gadget) Our family wandered early mornings through local towns then hung out by the pool in the heat of the afternoon and it was completely perfect. Isabella communicated quickly and was very helpful accommodating our change of dates. She was always at the end of the phone to text or call to answer any questions we had. I cannot convey how magical this property actually is; you would need to go there yourself to find out….

Such a beautiful house ! Very thoughtfully and stylishly decorated throughout with lots of lovely relaxing spaces. The kitchen is particularly well equipped and perfect for those that like cooking and entertaining for larger groups. The outdoor space and pool are also excellent - a special thank you to Isabella and Maria-Grazia for getting this ready for our visit even though off season. Lucugnano is very relaxed with a great little supermarket, bakery and butcher. A great base to explore the rest of the Salento region. Thank you again for hosting my family and I. We all had a lovely time!

We absolutely loved the palazzotto - what a place! A stunningly lovely house in the centre of the village - amazing high ceilings, spacious, stylish and very well equipped - and a stone’s throw from a good butcher, a charming little supermarket and the cafe in the square for caffe in the mornings. Morning sun on the east coast, then sunset on the west coast - without driving for more than half an hour! Wonderful place. We had such a good holiday. Excellent recommendations and friendly welcome from the hosts too.

8 of us stayed in this glorious house, our times overlapped a bit but we never felt crowded. The house is stunning inside, the incredibly well stocked kitchen is of particular note. We had hot weather and used the pool a lot. Isabella has renovated this house and the furnishings throughout are most tasteful. Lucugnano is a small village, one great restaurant, a bar and a pizzeria. It is not far to drive to Tricase where there is more choice. I would hope we will return one day!

The house is beautifully furnished, with lots of places to relax, in the house and garden, and a large well equipped kitchen. The housekeeper, who was charming and efficient, met us on arrival and showed us the local shop, and the two closest bars where we could have breakfast. The village is simple and quiet and well located for visits to Otranto, Gallipolo, Lecce and local beaches and cliffside walks. The house was a really comfortable and charming base in the beautiful Salento area, and we’d love to return.

A wonderful place to stay. Large, inviting rooms, including a glorious kitchen. Huge fireplace in the main reception room--perfect for burning olive wood. The new architect-designed pool area is excellent, both for bathing and relaxing. The town is attractive and friendly, and the range of places to visit nearby is impressive. We swam in the Adriatic, the Ionian Sea and a natural pool in the cliffs. Isabella and the housekeeper, Maria Grazia, were helpful and professional. I left my passport at the house on our departure: Isabella had a kind friend bring it to the airport!

We treasured our time at Palazzotto! Isabella is so gracious and helpful. The home was beautiful, well-designed, and welcoming. We were four celebrating a special occasion. The kitchen was masterfully equipped, and we are foodies so appreciated the details. Dinner outside in the garden was delightful. This is a home furnished with love and generosity. The town of Lucugnano is exceptional for its location and also its own special nature of tranquility and local intelligence. We will return!!! Kathleen

Beautiful house, nicely decorated - stylish but you feel at home - plenty of space (even for the kids to run around), lunch in the garden, drinks on the roof on a sunny day. Very comfortable, nice sitting room with fire place, plenty of books and lots of different spots to sit and read. Big, well-equipped kitchen, everything you need, all easy to manage. Well placed for good local restaurants and for visiting Otranto, Lecce and Gallipoli and the coast too. Sandy and rocky beaches; cliffs with stunning views over the Adriatic.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Isabella Lauro

  • Il Palazzotto di Lucugnano is close to the seaside . You can enjoy both the Adriatic coast, with its beautiful cliffs, rocks and small harbours like Tricase and Porto and Castro, and the Ionian coast, with its sandy beaches and cristal clear water
  • The location of Lucugnano is very convenient for visiting the beauties of Salento: historical sites, villages and landscapes. Dont' miss Lecce, Galatina, Otranto, Gallipoli, and small villages like Specchia and Alessano which are just few minutes drive
  • If you like walking there are nice tracks along the coast, like the Ciolo path between Gagliano and Novaglie. You could also discover the territory and the Mediterranean vegetation by riding the bicycle in the countryside paths along the coast
  • Lucugano is rich with art crafts and traditions. Worth a visit are the renowned laboratories of Giampiero Indino and Massimo Ferrari, which still produce, with traditional techniques, the "Terraccotta Salentina". In Tricase you can attend pottery courses.
  • In the area you will taste great food from sea and land relish the admired local wines like negroamaro and primitivo. Walking distance are two nice restaurants: Jolanda and Castello di Momo. Don't miss Bar Melissa with its cakes and vintage atmosphere
  • In Lucugnano you can buy fresh vegetables from the greengrocer in via della Madonna, delicious bread and taralli from bakery shop "le Futuse" and the famous olive oil from frantoio Santacroce or near Alessano "Le Matine_Bello"
