Masseria Impisi

Artistic character in Puglia... Tranquil interiors, chickens foraging in the olive groves, bikes for exploring - and a natural pool

Hidden but not hard to find, close to hilltop Ostuni, is a 15th-century masseria and two inspirational new builds. Artists David and Leonie, garden and nature lovers both, have lived in Italy for years; his sculptures dot the grounds, her mosaics shine like jewels. Find two apartments – one in the 16th-century Gatehouse and the other which featured in Grand Designs. Both are quietly stylish with extra bedrooms, cool Trani stone underfoot, bed frames made by David and creamy plaster walls with Leonie’s paintings on them. Kitchens are well-equipped, wet rooms are tiled with local stone, towels and gowns are dazzling white; spill out onto colonnaded areas for al fresco dining. There’s much to see and do, including an underground olive mill that dates from the 10th century, original cisterns that still harvest rain water, open air markets and Michelin-starred restaurants in town. The semi-wild grounds are filled with Pampas grass, cacti, ancient olive trees and a unique natural pool hewn from limestone rock. Borrow bikes, play boules, picnic on the beach just a mile away… Heaven in Puglia!
