The
Experience

An unadorned 1726 masseria, a charming family home – you couldn’t find a better place to stay for your discovery of Puglia. The outskirts of Mola de Bari may be unprepossessing but Rita’s smile, as she ushers you inside, brings instant cheer. The great hall with its uneven stone floor was once part of an olive mill and is filled with books, portraits and antiques with stories to tell. Lofty whitewashed vaulted rooms and metre-thick walls keep you cool in summer, and the light, gracious bedrooms are named after the women who once occupied them – Aunt Michelina, Grandma Rita, Great Aunt Annina, their mother Angelina, great grandmother Ritella – four generations of women whose precious note books inspired the homestay cookery school here. There’s a real passion here for local produce, and you can sign up to their cooking courses. You’re welcome to browse through the impressive library of history books; Rita will also happily tell you about less well-known local places. Enjoy the food, the conversation, the atmosphere; dine by candlelight and you’ll sample ancient family recipes and liqueurs from the time the Bourbons reigned in southern Italy. Unusual and authentic.

Reviews

We spent our final two nights in Puglia at this unprepossessing but charming, authentic country home where lovely Rita hosts her guests, be they passers-by or on one of her cookery (and touring) courses. The aromas coming out of the kitchen are the first thing that hits you and there's loads of different types of delicious food to partake of at breakfast and meal-times. We loved sitting around a common dining table with perfect strangers as conversation was easy where everybody's interest was food! Must visit again to take advantage of Rita's knowledge of places and history next time.

The heart of the masseria is it's hostess Rita Guastamacchia. We have never encountered such kindness and generosity in 50 years of traveling. This exceeded our wildest dreams. Rita is a superb cook who has a passion for history, particularly Puglian history and ecology. She will take you wherever you want to go, be it for a day trip or to shop for Puglian delicasies. Nothing is too much trouble. The house was an olive mill and was converted into a summer house for Rita's family a long time ago and to enter it is like stepping back a century. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
