The Experience

Come for the roses, the irises, the hostas! You’ll find over 230 different varieties of plant here – they are Rosanna’s passion. With drowsy shutters, buzzing bees and walls festooned in roses, the house and outbuildings appear to be in a permanent state of siesta. As do the seven cats, basking on warm window sills and shady terraces. There’s a touch of The Secret Garden about the half-hidden doors, enticing steps and riotous plants, and the air is fragrant with lavender, oregano and roses, many from France. The house and farm, on a wooded hillside, have been in Rosanna’s family for nearly 300 years; she gave up a career as an architect to create this paradise 40 minutes from Genoa. Homely, imaginatively decorated, bedrooms have handsome furniture, books, pictures; bathrooms come with baskets of goodies. Everyone eats together at a long table in the conservatory or outside, where lights glow in the trees at night. Rosanna, Domenico, young Vijaya and Samjhana are the most delightful hosts, and the home-grown food is a revelation: agriturismo at its best.

Reviews

Beautiful accommodation in a romantic landscape. It is difficult to find such warm hospitality and atmosphere in one place. Rosanna and her family are wonderful hosts and provide wonderful food. The location is connected to walking trails with wonderful views.

Sallie Rose, Seattle

We stayed for one night, en route from UK to Greece, and wish we could have stayed for longer in these beautiful surroundings; not even time to swim in the very inviting pool! Rosanna is a wonderful cook, and the Nepalese family who looked after us were sweet and very welcoming. Dinner was a communal meal, which can be intimidating, but Rosanna was a charming hostess and created a very pleasant atmosphere.

Hilary, Hereford

I stayed a week with Rosanna and Domenico. I needed some time to relax and unwind from a busy career. Rosanna assured me that the farmhouse would be ideal for me and she was right. Nothing was too much trouble for her, she fetched me from the train station and let me accompany her to the supermarket. My room looked out over the forest and I was able to sleep with the windows open, enjoying the cool fresh air. As a lone traveller I was made to feel welcome and never awkward. Meals were delicious and a wonderful opportunity to meet the other guests and make new friends. The pool was lovely too.

Christine, Plymouth

What a beautiful place. So peaceful and such lovely grounds. Although there were two other couples staying there you only saw them at breakfast as there were so many areas within the garden with table and chairs that you could sit in private. Rosanna was a brilliant host, very friendly and welcoming. Our room 'The Poet's' was lovely and quirky as was the rest of the place. We had dinner on both nights which was lovely and breakfast was excellent. So glad we saw this on the Sunday Times as one of Sawdays favourite 25 places to stay. Had never heard of Sawdays before this so glad be did!

Angela, Ledbury, Herefordshire

Due to bad weather where we were staying in the French Alps we decided to head south to Italy - a last minute decision - so the first thing I did was to look up Alistair Sawday and see if there were any suitable agriturismi in the direction we were aiming for - namely Alessandra and Parma. I thought La Traversina looked lovely and booked it. The setting is so peaceful, the hosts so charming and welcoming and the food so delicious and home-cooked and home-grown that it is impossible to find anything negative about it. Our room was lovely - interesting paintings and books and beautifully cool.

Briony, Tonbridge

Wow The perfect place and people for a getaway. The house, rooms and property are right out of a storybook, and maintained to perfection. The hostess Rosanna cannot be outdone. She cannot do enough for her guests, and the food is devine. Domenico's tomatoes are something special. We will be back for a longer stay.

Ken, Vancouver

This is a beautiful B&B! But what kicks this place over the top are the gracious host and hostess. We felt like one of the family. The food was excellent the rooms were spotless and our hosts were generous and welcoming. What a wonderful time we had.

Pauline

Rosanna and each of her wonderful family of staff made us so welcome. Our room was lovely, the pool was great, the garden was picture perfect. The food was divine and the company from several cultures was enormoous fun. In short, you MUST stay at La Traversina. Tanti baci, Rosanna.

  • During the nights of every beginning of summer, the forest surrounding our house is illuminated by thousands of small "stars", the fireflies each year offer us their extraordinary enchantment.
  • Not to miss the flowering of our garden, especially in May and June, more than 700 flowered roses welcome you, without forgetting irises, geraniums and hundreds of garden plants
  • In the months of May and June we offer you the opportunity to attend the preparation of the rose syrup, following an ancient recipe we transform the perfume of rose petals into an extraordinary syrup.
  • If you are keen on cooking you can attend dinner preparation and discover the recipes of a simple and tasty cuisine where the only secret is the use of high quality ingredients.
  • La Traversina is located in a hilly area on the border between Piedmont and Liguria, countless walks that will lead you to the discovery of a wild and uncontaminated wilderness.
  • The Province of Alessandria is an area not yet well-known but rich in attractions, small villages, wine-growing farms, castles and beautiful nature, and in an hour you can reach the Ligurian Riviera, Milan and Turin.
