A privileged setting for a peachy-coloured house. The view from the front sweeps down the hill and up to the other side, to fields and pockets of woodland; you can bask and gaze all day. Slip into the pool for the occasional paddle, pop down to the house for a glass of verdicchio. There is a meet and greet service and first-night restaurant reservations can be made, if arranged in advance with the owner. Inside, all has been decorated in simple country style: two blue armchairs, a large yellow sofa, a wooden dresser, old beams, new floors. Kitchen and dining room are connected by an archway, French windows open to a loggia, and ceiling fans keep you cool. Upstairs are three bedrooms, with a fourth cosily (warmly!) under the roof; bathrooms are traditional-modern. In winter you can snowboard in the Sibillini mountains, in summer spend the day at the beach at Civitanova – Le Marche is blessed with the Adriatic coast. There’s open-air opera in Macerata, an amazing cathedral at holy Loreto, and lovely restaurants and shops at little Loro Piceno up on the hill.
