The Experience

From your room you can stroll up winding paths to the Winter Garden for a sauna, or a wallow in the jacuzzi. Or down to the sun terrace for a swim in the lake. The landscaped gardens with their shimmering views make for an exquisite escape.

As for the 18th-century building, it started life as a hunting estate for European nobility and became a hotel in 1924. The beauty is matchless and the comforts many, yet there’s no standing on ceremony. Children will be as happy as any honeymooners, the tower suite is absolutely stunning, and leisurely breakfasts are delicious.

Electric bikes are on the house, so set off for the famous market at Luino, a five-minute ride. Take the ferry to tranquil Cannobio, or to the gardens of the palazzo on Isola Bella, the most magical of Maggiore’s tiny islands.

Location

The neighbourhood

Lake Maggiore is one of the most peaceful of the famous lakes, and hiking and biking paths abound. There are watersports too, and breathtaking hang-gliding antics over the lake. Visit Angera for its harbour and its fascinating doll and puppet museum, housed in a fortress. Take the ferry south to lively Stersa, then the cable car to Mottorone - the views are lovely. Drive to the Lake of Varese (35km) and visit the magical hilltop site Sacro Monte for more vast views.
