The
Experience

Close to Milan in an area famous for wine and rice, this classic 18th-century villa is a warmly relaxing place to stay. Rosella’s children having grown and flown she now takes huge care of guests and has restyled the family home with great flair. The result is elegantly cosy: original shutters, beams and fireplaces restored, antique, wrought iron and revamped furniture carefully chosen and a breakfast conservatory added. Talking of breakfast – it’s a stylish, tasty affair (in the courtyard in warm weather) with fresh flowers and white linen, local cheeses, hams, smoked salmon and home-grown fruit. The garden too is a well-tended treat, with long, green views towards Pavia, a saltwater swimming pool, hot tub and plenty of space to sit and unwind. Of the three bedrooms ‘Glicine’, named after the wisteria at its window, is on the ground floor, with its own fireplace; splashes of green and shabby chic-ery offset the dark beams and wooden floor beautifully. First floor ‘Cedro’ and ‘Betulle’ are also very comfortable; unfussy with calm colours and cleverly quirky touches. Bathrooms are first class. And there’s a handy guest kitchen.
