The
Experience

The history of this huge palazzo – built by Mantua’s ruling family in 1480 – hits you the moment you see the magnificent Ludovico Dorigny fresco on the cupola of the main hall. There are more grand frescoes and the Arrivabene coat of arms over the door, but, despite its grandness, Claudio and Luciana bring a warmth and friendliness to every stay here. Each of the rooms, all en suite, all on the second floor (reached by stairs only), reflects a particular passion of a particular family member. ‘Camera 800’ houses a beloved aunt’s paintings and prints alongside thick Persian rugs and gilt mirrors. The vast mezzanine ‘Mansarda’ glows with rich rust-coloured carpeting, batik prints and appliqué patchwork gathered over the years. And ‘Gli Sposi’s’ towering walls and windows give plenty of light and space for Claudio’s prized collection of golf diplomas, his father’s university degrees and a trove of family antiques. Breakfast is served in two large salons that double as lounges for the rest of the day – a huge feast consisting of brioches, fresh fruit and the traditional ‘sbrisolona.’

Local points of interest from Claudio & Luciana Bini

  • Palazzo Ducale (1556), the palace of the Gonzaga, is one of the largest monuments in Europe (34,000 square meters). Inside is the famous Camera degli Sposi.
  • Palazzo Te is a wonderful building built by Giulio Romano in 1500 for the ruler Frederick II Gonzaga.
  • Not to miss in in the old town is the Basilica of St. Andrea which also houses the relic of the Sacred Vessels.
  • Bibiena’s theatre (1767) is very impressive and furnished with decorated wooden boxes. Mozart's father claimed that it was the most beautiful theatre in the world.
  • The centre of Mantua is enchanting with its palaces, cobbled streets and restaurants. Typical Mantuan dishes are pumpkin ravioli, risotto and cured meats. Taste great wines from the plain (Lambrusco) and from the morainic hills (Chardonnay and Merlot).
  • There are beautiful walks along the lakefront from Porto Catena, passing the Castle of San Giorgio to the park Belfiore. You can tour the lakes by boat in the parco del Mincio. The bike path runs beside alongside the river Mincio to Peschiera del Garda.
