An intriguing approach… You drive up to the top of the village, continue on foot down a steepish path and arrive at the little stone cottage with mesmerising lake views. This is an elegant and heart-warming restoration of part of an old monastery by an interior designer owner; you get the upstairs apartment which is just for two and feels nicely private from the downstairs quarters. You enter through a beautiful, restored wooden door to a swish kitchen with an island and all you need to cook – although you can walk into town if you feel particularly idle. The large living room has a sofa and chair placed right in front of the windows which allow light to flood in – views over to the lake are stunning from here. The bedroom has pale stone, wooden beams and one deep red wall. Add embroidered linen, fluffy pillows and more watery views to the lake and you’ve got pure romance. Catch the ferry to Isola Comacina, Bellagio and Varenna, visit St Moritz, hike in the mountains, swim in the lake, stroll into Sala for your morning cappuccino or dinner by the lake. Guests often say they don’t want to go home!
