The Experience

The hotel oozes old-style charm. A 1900s townhouse in a quieter, less touristy part of the lake, it’s in the same street as the villa where DH Lawrence eulogised about the “milky lake” of Garda. The oxblood façade, with white relief and green shutters, is as striking as the view from the patio that overhangs the water.

The family could not be more helpful. Roomy bedrooms are wonderfully old-fashioned with big beds and wardrobes, 30s’ lights and polished terrazzo floors; beds are deeply comfortable and dressed in crisp cotton. Six rooms look onto the lake and have small balconies. The main open terrace upstairs is a magical spot at night, the water lapping below, the lights twinkling in the distance. There’s a small music room with a piano to play – guests sometimes do.
Breakfast is a feast, hot or cold, dinner is served at La Bissa with pasta and bread home made every day and grilled eel a speciality.

Reviews

A relaxing and charming place to stay. The hotel is a small boutique hotel but the facilities are completely up to date, clean, and well taken care of. The staff was very helpful and dinner and breakfast were delicious. The town of Gargnano was like something from years ago, everyone was kind, relaxed and seemed so happy. The view of the lake and the mountains across the way kept us entertained for hours while we sat at what became our "favorite" apero stop. Our favorite activity was sitting on the terrace of our room, reading, looking at the lake and just being so happy to be there.

You can walk in the shoes of D.H Lawrence, visit the families Lemon Grove, enjoy wine tasting or just sit back and listening to the lake water splash under your feet. Hotel Du Lac can offer all this and much more. Be sure to sample the excellent cuisine and wine list at the hotel's restaurant. As a reminder of your trip buy some Limoncello, olive oil, homemade jams from the family's shop.

Even better than your description. Denys and I spent three magical nights in this gem of an hotel. Thanks to the advice of our discreet and charming host, we walked in the footsteps of Lawrence to a local lemon grove and a splendid historical House and took boats to nearby must visit sites on the lake. Unforgettable moments all - but the best were at sunset when we watched fish and ducks from the terrace before our delicious breakfast and dinner. The village of Gargnano is charming. No need to go further afield and we wish we had booked a longer stay !

Wonderful place. Step back into time with luxurious period room and bathroom. Add to that excellent food and service. The staff went to every effort to make our stay welcoming and enjoyable. They gave us information on the local highlights and methods of travel to enable us to visit the marvellous places around this beautiful lake. If you like small hotels with friendly staff you will find this place adorable. Situated in a small village with an exquisite little square and harbour where you can enjoy the surroundings with an excellent meal under an orange tree

A really lovely hotel. We arrived on the first day of the season and we were almost alone in the hotel. The owner could not have made us feel more welcome. The room was lovely with access to the terrace for our daughter to play on and amazing views of the misty lake. The food was good and the house wine exceptional for the price. Dinner on a lake side table was charming. The local towns were lovely to explore. This hotel and the area is well worth a visit.

A delightful small hotel perched on the edge of Lake Garda. The owner was extremely hospitable and made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed swimming in the lake and breakfasts and dinners on the flower bedecked balcony. The food was excellent. Would highly recommend it to other travellers looking for a peaceful retreat near the water.

Location

The neighbourhood

Shops are a ten-minute walk, as is the ferry terminal for day trips around the lake. There are many activities – a weekly aperitivo/wine tasting at Hotel Gardenia wine cellar, a lemon grove tour after which you can buy limoncello, jams, olive oil and capers. Hotel du Lac guests can rent beach beds and umbrellas for free at the lido beach (a short walk). Book at massage at Hotel Gardenia, hire kayaks and explore the lake.

Local points of interest from Valerio Arosio

  • The most characteristic cultivation of our area was definitely the citrus grove. Since the XV Century monumental stone greenhouses were built around citrus trees planted in the ground. The citrus groves reached the peak in the middle of XIX Century.
  • We like to promote knowledge of the natural beauty here on Lake Garda and support the conservation of its territory. One example of this is the restoration of our lemon greenhouse where every week we organize a walk to deepen the tradition of citrus.
  • Did you know we produce our own extra vergin olive oil, lemon liqueur and bitter orange and lemon marmalades. Every week in our Hotel's historic cellar we organize wine tastings with wines from the Lake Garda area and various Italian regions.
  • Did you know D.H. Lawrence lived here from September 1912 to April 1913 and wrote some chapters of Thwilight in Italy. In our Hotel you can visit an exhibition about Lawrence's stay in Gargnano. You can also follow an easy walk on D.H. Lawrence's tracks.
  • Gargnano is in the center of Alto Garda natural park. From here you can make interesting walks to discover the natural beauties with unforgetable views on Lake Garda.
  • Our "Lido dei Limoni" Beach & Bar is located only 200 metres far from our Hotel. Our guests will enjoy the rental of beach chairs, sun beds and beach umbrellas for free. Here is also possible to rent kayaks and Sup.

Introducing

Valerio Arosio

The hotel was first bought in 1973 by Valeriano and Costantina Arosio (the present owners' parents) when it was an old run-down guest house. Over the years there have been many improvements but they've kept the charm that first drew the family to buy it. Signor Valerio took over the running in 2000. Photographs of the family history and its members are portrayed on the hotel walls.
