On the edge of a sleepy village your stone self-catering house perches on a hill overlooking great swathes of the Tiber valley while Monte Soratte soars in the background. Stroll into the village for coffee and some basic food shopping but for all else you’ll need to jump in the car. Rome, historic villages, lakes and coast are all within an hour’s drive – that’s if you can tear yourself away from this lovely, very private house. You enter on the second floor where you’ll find the harmonious bedrooms: the canopied bed in the master en suite room is tastefully romantic and you can walk straight out to the terrace through French windows; the twin overlooks the pool and valley beyond. Both shower rooms are big and spoiling. Spin down an open staircase to the wonderfully elegant living room, a crystal chandelier hangs above you; curtains made from Indian saris hang at the windows; the furniture is solid and inviting. A simple kitchen is off here with an oven and microwave, but there are plenty of places for eating out. There’s a shady seating area on the porch, a hammam to plunge into and the gardens are dreamy.
