Borgo San Gaetano

Bernalda, Matera

Elegant rooms and traditional Lucana hospitality in this eco-friendly hillside restoration. Cobbled roads, castle and church spire views

7 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 4

The renovation of this ancient manor with its little cluster of houses has been a labour of love, and the Dell’Osso family’s eye to detail is impressive. The buildings, once an oil press, oven and store house, have local stone balustrades, restored terracotta vaulted walls, lime-based paints, solar powered heating and water. The natural colours of the furnishings and the arched insets decorated with vases of flowers blend in perfectly. The four rooms in the larger Dimore are on two levels – each has an airy sitting room with cool tiled floors and a lofted bedroom above. The three Casalini apartments are on one floor and have their own entrances, vaulted agave wood ceilings and original fireplaces. At breakfast everything is laid out for you to help yourself: coffee machine, cakes and an array of local savoury treats. The helpful, friendly staff are happy to give ideas for trips out, regional food to sample, restaurants for dinner. You’re close to Matera with the Sassi cave drawings, the coast and the mountain range of Pollino. Return and gather in the communal living room or under the shady tall pines to chat about your day.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Noemi Dell'Osso

  • The Basilicata is a lively, dynamic region that can offer personalised adventures season after season: nature, breathtaking views, monuments, beaches, food and wine culture and popular traditions.
  • The Ionian coast is one step away from us. Famous for its fine golden sandy beaches, lapped by crystal clear sea and equipped with several bathing establishments, the Metaponto beach has a sweet and savage appearance.
  • Matera, the town of Sassi (Stones) is a few kilometres away. Famous throughout the world to have one of the oldest living communities, as well as UNESCO World Heritage.
  • Metaponto and its archaeological area constitute an open-air museum. Become one of the most important colonies of Magna Grecia, it is the best place to understand the historical evolution of the area from the Bronze Age to the Romans.
  • Craco, the ghost town, abandoned after a disastrous landslide, has been chosen by numerous directors as a movie set. A unique and unmissable place.
  • From Castelmezzano to Pietrapertosa, with the Lucane Dolomites that make a natural background, you can try the "Volo dell'Angelo" (Zip Wire): harnessed and hooked to a steel cable, you will enjoy the pleasure of flying, but above all a magnificent view.
