The renovation of this ancient manor with its little cluster of houses has been a labour of love, and the Dell’Osso family’s eye to detail is impressive. The buildings, once an oil press, oven and store house, have local stone balustrades, restored terracotta vaulted walls, lime-based paints, solar powered heating and water. The natural colours of the furnishings and the arched insets decorated with vases of flowers blend in perfectly. The four rooms in the larger Dimore are on two levels – each has an airy sitting room with cool tiled floors and a lofted bedroom above. The three Casalini apartments are on one floor and have their own entrances, vaulted agave wood ceilings and original fireplaces. At breakfast everything is laid out for you to help yourself: coffee machine, cakes and an array of local savoury treats. The helpful, friendly staff are happy to give ideas for trips out, regional food to sample, restaurants for dinner. You’re close to Matera with the Sassi cave drawings, the coast and the mountain range of Pollino. Return and gather in the communal living room or under the shady tall pines to chat about your day.
