Dalkey is one of Ireland’s most charming villages with gorgeous watery views over Killiney Bay and this pink Georgian ‘villa’, the last house at the edge of the village, has one of the best. Kind Jennifer opens her home for guests: curl up with a good book in a cosy pink sitting room, breakfast on homemade soda bread and muesli in the open fire’d kitchen, potter about the lavishly furnished drawing room (she has restored and re-upholstered much of the Victorian furniture). Above the kitchen is a delightful sunroom with flowering plumbago, striped sofa and a small sea-facing balcony (breakfast here when the weather’s clement). Your hostess is a passionate gardener: spot the potted mop head olive trees sitting happily at the front door and at the back a manicured lawn and a path winding up the rock face swathed in tropical flowers. Two bedrooms upstairs at the back are small, comfortable and en suite, another larger bedroom is at the front with sea views. It’s a short walk into the village for dinner, markets, galleries; sailing in Dun Laoghaire is ten minutes in the car and the delights of Dublin just ten miles.
