In wide countryside, set back from the main road in its own grounds, this castel romantique had been graciously managed by Danielle Renard for 25 years; now she, her son Renaud-Pierre and daughter-in-law Korakot make a delightful, welcoming trio. Discover bibelots and boxes, photographs and fresh flowers, Korakot’s embroideries, furniture antique and new. Roosters can be found in every medium, shape and size; don’t miss the bulging scrapbooks of drawings by guests and their children. Continental breakfast is on the veranda in summer; dinner at candlelit tables reflects the best seasonal produce (French menus by Danielle, Thai by Korakot). In the château, bedrooms, not huge, are decorated to create cocoon-like spaces; extras include children’s books and embroidered needlework, typical touches from these thoughtful hosts. Two big rooms in an outbuilding are more modern-oriental. All have electronic extras, suites have their own garden and jacuzzi bath, there’s a heated pool to laze in and a wellness space, too. You’re just a 30 minute drive from La Rochelle, grand beaches and Marais Poitevin Regional Park.
